She may be interested in alternative gemstones (like sapphire).
Unless she has specifically said she really wants an alternative gemstone...I would stick to a diamond center stone. Maybe you can get a band with side stones that are sapphires?
Also...do you know what shape diamond she likes? What type of band? Solitaire? Halo setting? 3 stone setting? Focus on finding those facts out if you don't know already.

Alternative gemstones are trashy. She would regret it mightily later.

This. Or a wedding band. I have a diamond engagement ring and the wedding band is alternating diamonds and amethysts (Our birthstone).

This is the best tip you are going to get in this thread: Find out if someone has access to a Jewelry show and try to get in with them. You will have access to all of the best stones available and will only pay wholesale prices.

Now if you're able to land a wife that'll suck your arse, THAT would be an expense probably worth it. Even better if she does it for cheaper, as you suggest.

I recommend Gabriel & Co rings. They are decked in diamonds, antique style like Verragio and Tacori, but not sickengly overpriced. Mine came from Anton's in BR. $7k for 1 carat high clarity and F color.

quote:Do not buy a diamond. Diamonds are the biggest sham in human history. They're not rare anymore - this isn't the early 20th century. The only reason they cost so much is because of a century-long ad campaign that - via movie stars and celebrities - has convinced men that buying a diamond is a traditional and proper way of expressing one's love. And the bigger the diamond, the bigger the love.
Shopping for engagement rings, educate me
Ever hear of anyone reselling a diamond? No? Here's why - because after you walk out of the diamond store, it has depreciated to a value approaching 0 (i.e., its true value). Don't buy into the sham!

What is your suggestion then.

Color is the most important C in my opinion. Gives it that sparkle baw.
