When I move to a new area, I try not dwell on what I left behind or the negative things in my new town, but try and find the good things and focus on them. So here's some of the things that are neat about TX:

1) Texans really take pride in their state. Every state should be more like this.
2) BBQ - it was here that I 'discovered' BBQ and IMO it's the best BBQ there is.
3) Strong music tradition - who doesn't like SRV?
4) H-E-B, best grocery store in America
5) People are friendly here.
6) Doctors and hospitals are very good.
7) Guns
8) LA influences

It's a big state depends on where you live

Unless you live in a place with a lot of topography this applies to just about everywhere

No state income tax but you pay for it in property taxes, so that's a wash

Unless you choose to live below your means in which case you come out ahead

The only answer I can think of is: BBQ

Guess it would also depend on your frame of reference. If you live in Louisiana then pretty much all of the things you don't like about Texas apply to LA but to an even greater degree. And without any of the good things.

They have bought several pieces of property in DFW. So its a matter of time.....although Central Market is pretty close to me as it is.

Louisiana has some pretty good things to make up for its shortcomings that it shares with much of Texas. Fishing, swamp life, food, and I cannot emphasize family enough. People who aren't from here don't get it. There is a certain deep rootedness that comes with it. A certain infrastructure of human capital from having so much family history here for so long. It creates a sense of camraderie that is without equal.

Perfect example is the floods this past August. Ascension Parish saw nearly 100,000 people flooded out of their homes overnight. Most were completely unprepared. Their homes had never flooded before, and the water went from a few puddles in their yards to feet in their homes while they slept. Some places got 6-8ft overnight. Not one fatality. Everyone got out alive. They used their boats and rescued literally all of their friends, neighbors, and strangers they could.

100,000 people were evacuated in 48 hours, all with almost zero support from FEMA, state police, national guard, ect. It was almost exclusively people living in those neighborhoods.

When they got to the sheltar, they took charge until the Red Cross took over. They made a huge mess of things, so the people set up their own food distribution centers. As soon as the water receded, dozens of locations became gathering points for locals to cook meals. Then, at lunch and dinner, people would just pick up boxes of food and drive around to the homes of friends and family while they worked and delivered meals. No beaurocracy, no government, just pure straight giving. I am yet to meet someone who lost their home who ever went without shelter or food for even a meal. Those AP'ers are incredible people.

-weather sucks [I DISAGREE - October through April is awesome]

-other than a few select areas, the landscape pretty mediocre at best; downright shitty in most places [I DISAGREE - many wonderful areas, truly special]

-no good beaches (with all that coast) [I DISAGREE - South Padre Island - not every beach is Destin, dipshit... few beaches in the WORLD are that nice]

-southern part of the state is a war zone for illegals and drug trafficking [a highly overstated opinion, but true in-part]

-home to the world's most hated football team [which is??]

Seriously. Louisiana is a toxic waste dump that has to cling onto big brother Texas for life any time any shite goes wrong.

It's one thing to open your apartment complexes and hotels to be rented to FEMA for evacuees at double market value. It's another for the very people who have lost their entire community and all of its infrastructure to spontaneously without any higher coordination at all put it all back together again in less than a week, with almost zero outside assistance. That's a f$&king logistical miracle.

moron

we took in TENS of THOUSANDS ,, and fed, clothed , provided medical aid.
this was the COUNTY/ City Govt and Churches that did this at their own cost long before they were moved into housing , you talk about a logistical nightmare
I was there. Look I admire your regions response to the recent floods, but communities all over the world do that for one another in crisis

not just Houston, although we took more than other cities but Dallas, Austin, San Antonio,, even Waco

I moved from Nola to Dallas because of the job opportunities out here, and can honestly say it's the best thing I've done in a while. There were really no jobs back at home. It also makes going back to Louisiana more enjoyable because you can play tourist and not have to live out the shitty parts for too long.

I know that, lighten up Francis; it was a joke.

We know Texas opened up their homes 10 years ago. Many have done so again, and we are thankful. I'm just sharing a unique story of the people in the flooded neighborhood picking themselves back up in a way that I think is pretty remarkable. That doesn't mean Texas isn't a nice place filled with nice people and great infrastructure. If I could get Louisiana's people to have Texas's work ethic, roads, and schools in. Louisiana, while adding an Orange Beach outside of New Orleans and some Mountains where Alexandria is now, it would be paradise on earth.
