This. I gave my son my old iPad. You could probably buy an older model on EBay for cheap

Don't let iPads become a babysitter/parent replacement tool.

I am seeing many kids whose mental growth is stunted from these devices. Study after study is showing that these things are rewiring the brain to think and behave differently. And this is horrible for a child whose brain is not developed.

I'm not sending my 18m old outside to play all day in the summer heat. A small kid can't play outside 12 hrs. a day

Get them a Nintendo DS handheld or something for games only, but apart from that make them actually do stuff.

If Apple is your choice. I would suggest looking online for the previous model but in new condition. You would save and it would be plenty fast enough for them.

They make good cases that make it nearly indestructible. Had an old iphone 3 with the internal cellular chip non functional, and got a Fisher Price for it and gave it to my 1 year old niece.

Though we have something like this. LINK Made from the ground up as a tablet for kids.

You can easily limit what they can do, and also have it only work during certain hours, and limit things like internet time and games.

Plus they are like $75 each.

Kindle fire. Movies, games, library app....mine are only allowed to use theirs on the weekends. No tv during the week either

You don't need a plan for the fires. Just wifi at your house.

We have had one for 2 years and she's now using it for actually reading books.

One leaves themselves open when you post on a public forum.

It's bad parenting that is the reason I can't hire good American workers for over half of my businesses. I have to rely on immigrants from India, China and the Middle East because our American kids' mental acuity and ingenuity is on a steep decline. I never had problems like this 20 years ago, but now I have to deal with it. So shut the frick up and take the criticism.

I resemble that remark.

I appreciate the feedback. As many have said you can't beat the iPad for ease of use but even 1st generations are pricey. And they don't need something quite that big for their alphabet and numbers games. Eventually I'll probably have to buy them anyway. I have a big stupid rubber case that makes mine pretty bombproof.

I'd like something a little smaller and a lot cheaper but still easy for a two year old to use. I'll check out the suggestions and thank you all for same.

And to all you non-parents concerned about my kids not playing outside, I guess you don't read TD everyday or watch the news. The world is more dangerous now than it ever has been. Kids get raped and murdered in their own yards everyday.

Seriously though, it took me so long to respond because I was at the park honing my 3 year old's left handed sinker and right handed curve. And unlike most of you great parents, I don't stare at my phone and ignore my kids when I'm "playing with them."
