Payton expanded on those thoughts during an interview with Jarrett Bell of USA Todayand drew a line from Smith’s murder to the overall climate of violence in New Orleans. Payton talked about his hatred of guns and his feeling that there are too many of them able to be obtained too easily, adding “so be it” if his opinion is unpopular in Louisiana or elsewhere.

Payton said that the toll violence has taken on New Orleans recently has largely been overlooked because the impact has been heaviest in poorer neighborhoods and that Smith’s death highlights the issue for a wider audience.

“We don’t hear this noise when something happens in New Orleans East, or in the Lower 9,” Payton said. “Now you creep into the Garden District … I just know this: Our city is broken. … It’s like our big little secret. They don’t want to kill tourism. But right now, it’s like the Wild, Wild West here.”

I could make a great Will Smith joke here, but I'll hold on to it for another time.

Don't agree. The only reason this is getting so much press is because it is a former Saints player. If this had been just a regular person in the Lower Garden District, you may hear some noise about it, but it wouldn't be national news.

But I do agree with one part of his statement. It is the Wild Wild West.

Unfortunately, people like Sean condemn the act but nothing that leads up to it. Guns aren't the problem, criminals are.

nola was worse in the 90s
All cities have crime
Stay out of bad areas and you're fine
Yeah but food and culture
Payton only knows about bourbon street

That should do it.

And this only proves that's it's not a poverty thing. This criminal was a multi millionaire. It speaks to the environment these people grow up in that they think it justified to gun someone down over an argument.

I think poverty plays a role but it's a violent culture that mostly to blame.

A culture that glorifies violence and lawlessness. Incarceration isn't looked upon with shame but with "street cred". My fault tho.

This wasn't a random act of violence.

Thanks Sean. Now that you've solved violent crime, please figure out how to run a balanced offense, play some defense, and win more than 7 games a year.
