Scott Jurek, the famous ultra marathon runner, is about to break the Appalachian Trail speed record. He is on pace to finish in 42 days with only a few hundred miles left. That is an average of 55 miles per day.
He is also a vegan.
Below is a comparison on the toll this feat has taken on his body.

If you can walk from Georgia to Maine, then you're a badass.

And I bet those people don't look like they just left the front gates of Buchenwald.

And they actually had time to enjoy it. This guy is a physical freak of nature and all, but he's doing the AT wrong.

I took the Kids up to Clingman's Dome in the Smokies and they were complaining about the trail (like 3/4 mile each way) and we ran into a large pack of people who had came dow from Maine and were on the way to Georgia, they were at it for months.
It's crazy how much time you have to devote to the trail. Apparently a lot of people will do a couple of waypoints at a time. Like say go from Ga to the smokies, then stop then go back another time to go from the Smokies to Virginia, then break again and so on...

He is on day 41 today and has over 200 miles to go. Not going to make it in 42, but should still break the record. Maybe 4 more days.

I'll disagree with you here.
There's no "wrong" way to hike a hike, so long as you're following the proper permitting procedures and Leave No Trace principles and aren't putting yourself or others in harm's way.
I've met plenty of other hikers who, unlike me, would consider a day a bust if they spent it fishing or swimming in the mountains rather than clearing two or three passes. For those hikers, hitting benchmarks and timing speed is what they enjoyed. I'm not one to tell them that's "doing the [trail] wrong." A few I talked with were all about setting personal records and such.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure I'd break an ankle if I tried running with a pack like some of the hikers I saw.
One mantra I hear often on trail is to "hike you own hike." No one else is going to be able to tell you what specific piece of gear will work best from you or what you need to do to find an experience fulfilling.
