2) In the context of the aircraft that flew near the naval ship a few days ago the Navy pretty much came out and said you don't shoot down a plane for being annoying. Especially one that isn't armed and isn't from a country that you're at war with.
No you don't shoot them down. But after attempting radio contact repeatedly for 20 minutes they refuse to respond you must do something. What you do is lock weapons guidance system onto the planes. They can detect this in the plane and I assure you them frickers will bugout and won't come back.

Most people do not understand what happens during that type of fly by. The Navy ship is basically defenseless during the fly by because the crew shuts down the automatic defensive weapons that will take out the plane and any launch from the plane. If another aggressor takes action against the Navy vessel at the same time there will be major problems. That's a simple explanation.

Sshhh. We're the U.S. we won the Cold War so we can do anything, anywhere, at anytime and without consequence.

Do not attempt to lecture me kind sir on matters of international foreign policy, or Cold War and post Cold War history. I am rather adept on the subjects. I will gladly sit down and have a discussion with you over a cup of coffee or a beer. For the record, I already apologized for my rather visceral response in this thread, and for the record, (not that it matters and am not trying to put more response bait out there) I am a retired Army officer who majored in Poli-Sci and focused on Soviet Foreign Policy. Dr Wayne Parent was one of my main profs at LSU. For all those who espouse the history of the episodes of "brinksmanship" during the Cold War, i.e. buzzing of aircraft and fake interceptions, etc... I get that... It went on by both sides for a long time before the collapse of the Soviet Union.... I am merely bringing up the factual point that it is just now in the past couple of years ramping up because of a (rightfully) perceived weakness by the Russians towards our (complete incompetence and lack of) international leadership, appeasement and cowardice by the current administration. If I were Putin, facing such a cowardly feckless weakling like our current (gag/puke) "commander in chief," I would do the same thing!! Have a nice evening. If you ever need a lesson on foreign policy or history, leave me a way to contact you. LOL.

If you are continually getting plucked in the nuts and don't say anything, it's because you like getting plucked in the nuts.

One of them was an American citizen. True story.

They might but ramping up but their economy can't keep up with it. Now I am no economist. Not by a long shot, but for all this "Look at us! We Russians are back!" is really something they can ill afford. They've been planning to up defensive spending for years, and they did. But that expansion has stopped for now and will even decrease next year. If they want to run around and play super power and spend money they don't have then let them.
The US is still the global leader and it's not even close and as a responsible global leader there is no need to swat an annoying aircraft out of the sky or anything like it.
And for what it's worth, I like global hegemony. I think we stand in agreement in the world being a place of self-interest and the US should be no different. But these Russian planes have been nothing but a nuisance and deserved to be treated as such.
Here's a decent story from earlier on Russia's tanking economy. LINK

I'm confused about what y'all expect the president to do. Start bombing Russian cities because the Russians are doing what they've always done?

Russia has always thought it was a great power, for centuries.
Thought being the operative word. They have never come to grips with the fact they are a wannabe European backwater that has ambitions that far outstrip its abilities.
