There's always going to be haters, and the guy a couple pages back who does both and pointed out the things that make cyclists stand out is pretty spot on. Still, I don't think it bothers most people.
As for me, I used to be an average runner, but the diminishing cartilage in one of my hips doesn't agree with the wear and tear, so I'm switching to biking now. Just got my heavy arse (approx 30 lbs) German trekking bike a couple weeks ago. LINK
Between the bike and the 10+ lbs of security chain / ulock I think my 5 mile commute is equivalent work to riding several more miles on a good road bike. (I live in NYC and if I don't lock it up with a heavy locks, all or parts of it will be gone.)
I've only ridden a couple times and my wife is making me wait until the end of this week to resume... that's when the extra life insurance she took out on me goes into effect.
Can be a little dicey riding in the city.
