re: Running vs Cycling

Kind of stunned this is a multi-page thread. Didn't know the divide even existed.

I run and I bike. I like both.

I don't think either is naturally more difficult than the other.

I do think the hardest thing I do between either is probably climbing serious hills on the bike.

But, run interval training sucks arse pretty hard too.

Guess it depends on what level of intensity you apply to either one.

Good Lord.

As a cyclist, let me say that there's nothing lamer than a cyclist talking tough.

Nothing. Seriously.

re: Running vs Cycling
Not all cyclist descend mountains or go fast as you describe. Most are boring 17 mph max riders just like boring 9 minute/ mile runners. I've raced both running and cycling. For me personally, cycling is more difficult because I'm a bird leg runner. And I agree, road bike racing at 30 mph in a pack of 30 riders all jockeying for position is nerve racking.....way more intense then any mountain bike racing I ever did. But running at 4:45 / mile pace for 6 miles with the last 2 miles at full gallop chasing 2 guys who just dropped a 4:20 on you at mile 4 is pretty intense too.

re: Running vs Cycling
There's always going to be haters, and the guy a couple pages back who does both and pointed out the things that make cyclists stand out is pretty spot on. Still, I don't think it bothers most people.

As for me, I used to be an average runner, but the diminishing cartilage in one of my hips doesn't agree with the wear and tear, so I'm switching to biking now. Just got my heavy arse (approx 30 lbs) German trekking bike a couple weeks ago.

LINK

Between the bike and the 10+ lbs of security chain / ulock I think my 5 mile commute is equivalent work to riding several more miles on a good road bike. (I live in NYC and if I don't lock it up with a heavy locks, all or parts of it will be gone.)

I've only ridden a couple times and my wife is making me wait until the end of this week to resume... that's when the extra life insurance she took out on me goes into effect. Can be a little dicey riding in the city.

Runners don't bother me but cyclist piss me off because they bitch about not getting respect from people in automobiles. Then they break traffic laws that are also meant for them. The ones in Oxford refuse to stop at stop signs and yield. They expect everyone in automobiles to look out for them.

not a weight weenie, but where are you guys shaving off weight, besides the frame and wheelset of course? pedals? gruppo? saving 30 grams on carbon bottle cages doesn't make much sense for what they cost...

You pussies call me when you do an Ironman

I don't even own a road bike, just a TT bike, so I rarely ride in groups bigger than 2 or 3. I can't compare a bike race to a marathon, but I can compare tris to running alone. I can tell you that it's all hard if you're doing it right. I've been completely beat down by 100 mile rides time and time again, only to get up the next morning and run 2-3hrs. Both suck in their own ways. All racing is fun, it all involves strategy, training, grit, determination, equipment, and a will to win. If you're a true competitor, you'd like cycling, running, or triathlon. I cannot imagine a 68 mph bike ride. Anything over 40 on a TT bike feels way out of control.

Running is more primal. I don't remember watching nat geo and seeing some dude chase down a lion on the Serengeti with a trek.

Come on now. You know that lots of fatties do IM. And there is nothing impressive about your 15mph IM bike pace.

15? Come on man...17

NO,I'm not fast, but I ride @19 on the long course stuff. And yes, I see plenty of fatties doing tris these days. At Ironman AZ this year my little girl told me that fat ladies and people with no legs were beating me

And I'm not antisocial, but you cycling elitist people freak out if some aerobars show up for a group ride! I promise, I know better than to be down on the bars in a group.

re: Running vs Cycling
I lied. That should be alittle under 10 per hour. Did my math wrong.
