Partial shrink, as it's called, is now the most common — and costly — type of shoplifting, according to Grabango, a startup that provides checkout-free tech for retailers.

In a recent analysis, the company tracked nearly 5,000 transactions with computer vision to see what shoppers ultimately ended up paying for.

Unsurprisingly, the study found that shoplifters are more likely to get goods past a machine than a human. What is surprising is that they were 21 times more likely.

In some cases, this means simply not scanning an item, but it also includes keying in the code for a cheaper item instead of the proper one.

I forgot to scan my avocado the other day. Still cheaper than paying a cashier.

I’ve certainly forgotten to scan things in the past. Usually dogfood or anything else on the bottom rack of the buggy.

Also, how many times do people accidentally overscan multiples of items?

All the walmarts by me have expanded their self checkouts. And none of them have those weight sensors in the bagging area.

It’s really not all that surprising when you consider that these retailers never check on these folks when they’re doing it.

Add to that the fact that many of these municipalities wouldn’t charge people with a crime, even if they were caught.

Home Depot in Lake Charles is trying to get away from self-checkout. The manager wants it gone due to theft but corporate is fighting him. Now he has people "assist" you in self-checkout defeating the purpose of it since they scan everything for you and only let you punch the screen to complete the transaction.

Walmart too is opening more cashier isles and is said to be considering doing away with it on a national level or at least reducing it greatly.

I hate going to HD now because of the situation since I prefer self-checkout when I am in a hurry but per usual the dregs of society ruin stuff for the rest of us.

That's the cost of trying to skimp on labor by pushing off the bagging/ringing up items on the customer. A simple cost/benefit analysis should determine if it's worth keeping self-check-out kiosks.

I was never properly trained to operate the self-checkout before they stuck me there...so I was bound to make a mistake or two.

You put an unpaid laborer at a task they are untrained for, and you expect it to be done correctly?

Maybe stop giving all the human jobs to robots. I bet Trader Joe's doesn't have this issue

I call it my fee for checking myself out. I get at least on item free.

It’s not just that. If they keep the kiosks, then the people who actually pay for their stuff are subsidizing those that steal.

So, even if the kiosks save the stores a tiny percentage. It sucks for people that actually pay for their shite.

My daughter was in a Walmart two nights ago and they had no check out registers at all open because none of the cashiers showed up to work.
It was self-check-out only with some long arse lines. I've never stolen or skipped scanning items, but that would probably have had me pissed off enough to do it just to get back at them.

Yep, seems like they’ve been told to offer to do the scanning for everyone too.

The Walmarks over by me implemented 80% of their store to be self checkout.

A year later, they are going to 90% in-person cashier. Asked the GM about it and she said theft and that "people want someone else checking them out" (they don't).

Well considering most self checkout attendants have an IQ of 80 and always on their phone this doesn’t shock me one bit.

Sadly, the government cannot instill morals and good character in a person.
That's why laws made in the name of "gun control" only hurt the law abiding citizens, because the criminals don't adhere to laws.
People with no morals are destined to do bad things and often times more than not, it ends up hurting others.
Shoplifters will continue to do so because they have no morals and think nothing of taking something from others.
They feel entitled to the stolen goods.
