You do realize you will never know all the answers to these questions? Not saying to not talk with your pastor....just realize he's not ever gonna be able to answer all your questions. If he's a good pastor he will acknowledge that.
Live by faith, not by sight. It's human nature to want to know the answers to everything. But at some point you have to realize your human brain cannot possibly understand everything there is to know about God....and no other person on this planet will have all the answers as well. That's when faith comes in.

I also think that in olden times it was a way to control people. If you have expansive borders and no way to make sure your people are staying loyal and being good, you simply tell them that if they do bad stuff, they'll go to some fiery place for eternity.
This is pretty much where I'm at with it all.
I'd like to think there's a being or something out there, but on the other hand I just can't get into organized religion. Most of those people are crazy. I just try to be a decent person and let whatever happens happen. Which, I think if you look at the big picture, that's whole point of it all.

That's exactly what I'm saying...he doesn't have the answers, no one does.
I was raised catholic and gave up on that a long time ago. It works for me and it works for those that are Catholics/religious. Live and let live, but you will NEVER get your answer. Go with god or go with science.

Faith is not a reliable basis for belief, rather faith is that which reconciles you to the fact that your beliefs are unreliable, your prayers are not answered. Faith allows you to ignore the misses, but take into account the hits, and therefore suppresses the scietific way of thinking. Faith is the side effect of believing something due to moral rather than rational criteria

also the whole money thing rubs me the wrong way
I know churchs are a business and have to keep the lights on, but how much of their week to week messages are centered around money and tithing?
do they want you to come back next week to hear the word of God or so you will have an offering?

You can still be a person of science and have faith in God.
I believe in modern medicine and God. If I found out I had cancer...I'm not gonna just try to pray it away and refuse all medically proven treatments to fight it.

God cares less about what religion you followed then how you treated people. Love your neighbor as your self is the golden rule. If you succeeded in doing this, you will at least make it to purgatory. Once in purgatory, you have the choice to accept Jesus as savior or not. If you choose never to, you go to Hell. If you choose to, you can pray your way into heaven.
In the end, those that treat people well get in. Those that don't and refuse to repent, don't.

I'm a religious guy also and I can tell you that it is perfectly normal to have questions. You should ask questions and explore every aspect of your faith and religion. I know for a fact that priests encourage this all the time.
And don't be discouraged if someone associated with your church tries to make you feel uncomfortable about asking questions; most times they are just scared to do the same.

If you start having regular orgasms and living life for others, this mentality will change.
I would suggest start volunteering at an animal shelter. Hot chicks often work at those and they're generally pretty easy after seeing how well a guy takes care of adorable children substitutes.

Sounds like maybe you should be looking for another church. Our church takes an offering every service like any other church....however they never try to guilt you into giving by making you feel bad about not always tithing and always make sure to let people that are just visiting know that they are NOT expected to give during the offering.
Our church's stance on tithing is that it is a matter between you and God. I've never been made to feel bad during a sermon for not always tithing like I should.
