Recs for Alaskan Cruise?

Never been on a cruise before. And since I'm a pasty, soulless ginger, I'd prefer to avoid the Caribbean cruises. Anyone been on a cruise to Alaska? Which lines are best? Are they all inclusive?

Crystal lines is the best!

Is it worth getting a room with a balcony or just one with a window?

Take an excursion to go spend the day with the cast from Alaskan bush people.

I did a Holland America out of Seattle a few years ago that was pretty good. I don't think a balcony is necessary as you have solid views from any little room. But, I think paying for a suite is worth it for the extra space.

Holland America twice, Carnival once. i'd go Holland America. smaller ship and not much more $$ than Carnival

Ever think about small ship? Look into Un-cruise Adventures. 10x better than large ship

Any ship will do. I'd really love to vacation at some cabin on a lake with a mountain view in the background, but also within a 30 min drive or so to civilization for meals, etc. But I guess that may be asking too much, huh?

Nah, it's pretty easy to find cabins close to towns or cities.

I've been on Disney out of Seattle and Vancouver. It was enjoyable. I was 19 and 21 when I went.

Went on Princess in 2013. Not bad. Whatever port offers the Misty Fjords seaplane excursion, do it

I went on one in May on Celebrity. I would go with either Celebrity or Princess. Definitely do the southbound passage. Much easier to fly out of Vancouver or Seattle rather than Anchorage. Go around May, weather is great. I would do a balcony this time around, and get a drink package.

Make sure your cabin is on the right (starboard) side.
You will see more. I think it's best to spring for the balcony on Alaska cruises.
Excursions will cost more so choose wisely. A lot of good things to do though.

I went early in the season through Norwegian. My wife and I had a blast. It can rain a fair bit or be gloomy, but if you know that going in then it shouldn't ruin the trip for you. Some old ladies were bitching about it when we were leaving the ship.
Alaskan cruises are about appreciating the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, not slamming Mai Tais by the pool for a week.

Watching the glaciers calve from our room was money well spent. Chatty Cathy up on deck kept missing everything and was ruining our experience. Moved down to our room and relaxed.

We did Rhapsody of the Seas two years ago from Seattle to I he inland passage. Smaller ship than we usually cruise on. Great food and drink but, kind of boring on sea days.
I highly recommend a balcony room. While at Glacier Bay, the captain spun and ship three times while it was right in front of the glacier. It was incredible. It is difficult to describe given the freshness of the air and you could hear the glacier cracking.
If you want a bigger shipbthatvis more adult, look at Celebrity.

Ketchikan is where Misty Fjord excursions originate. Had a group die in a crash last year

I heard about that.
There are a lot of things that can kill you in Alaska.
