"I aint in it for my Health". Netflix. Its about Levon Helm. Nothing really in depth. Just documents some of his last work. Really good watch. Billy Bob Thornton makes a cameo and blows down with him

Another good music doc on Netflix is "Muscle Shoals".

Don't think I really need to explain that one. Its about all the music that came through and recorded at Fame studios. Holy shite the names....

Sound City - About a small analog recording studio that quietly recorded some of the most epic albums ever and almost disappeared in the transition to the digital music craze then resurrected itself only to fold. Dave Grohl featured in this one and directed it. They make a BIG deal about their old board. Cool stuff! It's on Amazon Prime

Dear Zachary was definitely so intense. It plays out like a movie, you can't believe this is real life and not scripted.

Something is Wrong with Aunt Diane is also intense. I really want to know what happened that day and what is the truth. It just doesn't add up or make sense to me and I don't know that we will ever have the answers. I just can't accept what the official story is but I can't go into that without major spoilers.

Surprised not to see these

- Ken Burns Civil War on netflix streaming. Uses a lot of first hand written accounts.

- Good Hair narrated by Chris Rock. Funny but really eye-popping about the lengths black people go to style their hair.

No No: A Dockumentary

This absorbing documentary looks at the stormy career of Pittsburgh Pirates ace Dock Ellis, who threw a no-hitter June 12, 1970, while high on LSD.

on netflix

I just finished it a couple of hours ago. It was very good. Gives you the real picture of what it was like to be in major league baseball, and also a feel for the early 70's. The no hitter is just a small part of it really. I moved to Pittsburgh in 72 and it was a great time to live there.

Holy frick! Page 6 and nobody beat me to it...

Square Grouper

Same guy that did Cocaine Cowboys and The U. Three segments about drugs and South Florida in the late 70's early 80's.

Seg 1 - Ganja church.
Worst part of the film.

Seg 2 - Black Tuna Gang
Good segment.

Seg 3 - Everglades City, FL
Outstanding - very entertaining and interesting stuff here! Can't believe Hollywood never cashed in and made a movie about this. Basically, an entire village (500-700 people) in SW Florida became involved in smuggling before the Feds ended up arresting 80% of the adult male population in one swoop.

Check out "Somm". An inside look at the grueling Master Sommelier exam. Really interesting, even if you have no knowledge of wine.

Dick Proenneke

Alone in the Wilderness.

It comes on PBS occasionally during donation drives. Great video of a guy moving to Alaska and building a cabin by himself. A terrific video. It is inspiring just what he can do by himself. Also great that he had the forethought to film it.

quote:

Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, and cut and peeled the logs he would need for his cabin. Dick Proenneke returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years. Dick filmed his adventures, and Bob Swerer later turned the film into a video so we can all watch this amazing man build his cabin by hand.

There are several followup videos as well.

Tours some of the slums & ghettos of this shitehole and interviews warlords (General Rambo & General Butt Naked). Should be mandatory viewing for all poor people in the US, and those whose ancestors did not come here willingly.

30 for 30 ESPN doc on Netflix. Showed the history of Soviet Hockey from the Soviet perspective and had great interviews with members of that 1980 Soviet team.

The 1980 US hockey gold medal is one of our iconic sports moments, and to see the prelude, during and aftermath from the other side is amazing. One of the best docs they did.

McConkey on Netflix

Shane McConkey pioneered freestyle skiing, base jumping, and putting them together creating ski basing. Fricking intense documentary w some crazy camera shots. Guy lived life on the edge 100% of the time but lived this life how he wanted. Adrenaline junkie in the truest sense.

WWII in HD or Vietnam in HD. These are technically documentary series, so you'll have plenty to watch. Lots and lots of real film from the front lines. I will warn that some of the scenes are truly gruesome. My wife couldn't watch due to that.
