The rifle looks pretty pristine right now. Are you sure your papaw put rounds through it? Its your rifle but something you may want to think about before shooting it.

Not much of a gun guy letting a child shoot a Garand.
What could go wrong?

Well it’s the one rifle that actually has a clip, so you can screw that up.

Just watch your thumb when you load it.

And might want to hold onto junior.

Make sure you read and use the correct 30-06 ammo.

That rifle won two wars. It’s excellent.

Nice assault rifle. Why would anyone need to possess this weapon of war?

1. Battle Rifle. Full-size rifle round. Semi-automatic only fire. Maximum magazine capacity of seven. Significantly more recoil than an assault rifle, so the operator cannot move and shoot like one can with an assault rifle. Assault rifle rounds are intermediate rounds; more power and range than pistol rounds; much less recoil than full-size rifle rounds. I.e., moving and shooting, i.e. assaulting is much easier.

2. An antiquated, obsolete (by most modern military standards) weapon of war.

3. Doesn't need to, but probably wants to. Also legal to own.

Take that as you will, hoss.

"Nice assault rifle."

Maybe don't comment on things you obviously have no real knowledge of.

Oh, I see a magazine Nazi is trying to educate people about clips and magazines, and is WRONG in the process.

It is NOT the ONLY gun to use a clip.

Won’t lie, I’m totally jealous. No less than Gen. George S. Patton himself called the M1 Garand “the greatest battle implement ever devised”.

DO NOT shoot standard 30-06 ammo out of that gun. You'll break the op rod. You need Garand-specific 30-06 ammo.

Wrong.
Don't know what you mean by Garand specific. M2 ball?
Don't shoot hot handloads. Soft point ammo may cause failure to feed.

No, you’re wrong.

Garands were not designed to shoot modern hunting ammo.

The ammo they were designed to shoot has a specific pressure curve. Use ammo that’s higher than that pressure curve and you could bend or break the operating rod.

Several manufacturers make ammo that is safe for the Garand.

Actually it was (and is) good advice. The issue is the powder's burning rate, not the bullets (some soft-points are fine). Not all commercially-available ammo is a good match for an M1. Decades ago I did a deep dive on this when I bought an M1, and started reloading for it. I seem to recall at that time settling on IMR 4064 as the best powder. Regardless, and even if just buying commercial ammo, the better course is to search around and see what those who shoot M1s regularly recommend.

WRONG. The U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M-1 a/k/a "Garand" is not an assault rifle. First, and foremost for those who fret about such things, the M-1 does not have, and cannot accept, high-capacity magazines. It has an internal (non-detachable) magazine that is limited to 8 cartridges (loaded with an en bloc clip). Second, it is not selective-fire, meaning it cannot fire more than one round with each pull of the trigger. Third, it does not use an intermediate-power cartridge; the .30-'06 is a full-power cartridge.

But you go ahead and preach about subjects on which you're wholly ignorant.
