Looking at the pic, I’m wondering if this rifle isn’t one of the commercial copies that Springfield Armory (the private company, not the government arsenal) made back in the 80s and 90s.

The metal Parkerizing looks almost brand new.

Save your thumb

Load M1 the Army way

Also, there are sites where you can download the official Army field manuals

Wrong.
Don't know what you mean by Garand specific. M2 ball?

DO NOT shoot standard 30-06 ammo out of that gun. You'll break the op rod. You need Garand-specific 30-06 ammo

Solid advice. OP, take this advice.

Looks like a post war rear sight. And that thing is in great shape. I tend to agree with you, or that is a well preserved example.

Either way, OP quit letting your kid carry it around and put it in a case unless it's being displayed or shot.

Why not set up some cardboard targets and let him practice on those to get used to the rifle? It is not deer season anyway but if you start working with him now, he will be good to go this fall.

No, you’re wrong.

Garands were not designed to shoot modern hunting ammo.

The ammo they were designed to shoot has a specific pressure curve. Use ammo that’s higher than that pressure curve and you could bend or break the operating rod.

Several manufacturers make ammo that is safe for the Garand.
This is good advice, though you can safely fire modern commercial 30-06 with an adjustable gas plug.

Also, and this may sound dumb, check the barrel and magazine to confirm whether your rifle is chambered for 30-06 or .308. Based on the condition of the wood, it looks like your rifle may be a CMP special, some of which include versions re-barreled for .308.

If you try to fire 30-06 in one of those you're gonna have a bad day.

It wouldn't lock if you did that right? Just have to bang the thing out of the chamber with a rod from the front of the rifle if it got crammed in there.

In theory, but I've heard enough stories of Garands firing out of battery that I wouldn't want to be the one pulling that trigger.

Most of the .308 versions have a plastic insert in the magazine to prevent loading 30-06 rounds, though.
