depends. if algae sets in, i use a formula on that website to determine how much to keep it at until the algae is dead which means i may go through 10+ gallons in a few days.
i typically buy the 3 gallon packs at sams probably weekly during the summer for roughly $10 each time.

Don't do it.
I don't own a pool but my parents put one in when they built their current house. My dad hates it and says he wish he wouldn't have even considered it. It's amazing how something is constantly broken. You also won't use it near as much as you imagine.

This is not a normal OT answer. But one of experience. I built and serviced pools off and on for almost 10 years now.
Buy an above ground.
Because when you are tired of it, it doesn't take a crap ton of money to get rid of it and repair your yard. In fact, most of the time you can find someone to buy it if it's in decent shape. At the least, many people will just come take it down for free.
Then seed, or sod, and done.
Whereas with an inground it's fill it in, or have it removed, then filled in. Either way, it's a lot of money to have someone do that, and bring the dirt in.
The prime time for having a pool, is when your kids are between the ages of 7-15. Before that, they are too young to not require 100% constant attention in the pool, after 15, they have a license and can go hang with friends...etc.

I thought it was a good idea to buy a house with a pool, but mine has been a money pit. id fill it in if i havent put so much money into it.

I rarely, if ever, have an algae problem.
You are having them b/c you aren't maintaining a correct amount of chlorine. The Clorox dissipates too quickly (as it is designed to do). You are, in effect, shocking the pool on a too-often basis.
I don't see how you're saving money, not being a Dick, I've had a pool for a long time.

I think it will depend on where you live at really. If you live someplace where the pool can be used for majority of the year...then a pool will obviously be used more.
Whenever we buy a house it will have a pool. That will be one of our must haves. Summers are much more bearable in AZ if you have a pool.

Liner pools are generally crappy. Spend the money and go with a gunite pool.

We have a salt water pool and it has given us very little trouble. Stays cold most of the year though

I had an algae problem because I inherited a flawed pool that wasn't sucking down the tabs and I was toob stupid and had too much to do with a new house to notice until it was too late.
The Clorox method has been a godsend.
Eta maintaining a pool isn't rocket science but it does take some time to get to know it.

The only difference in using bleach and tablets is the the way you are putting chlorine into your pool and the ability to control your stabilizer.
The Bleach, Borax, and Baking Soda (trouble free pool forum) method is not preached as a money saver but more of a way to control the CYA which is your stabilizer. Continuos use of the tri-Chlor tablets will cause the the CYA to go through the roof. High levels of stabilizer will require you to have more free Cl ions in the water to have a sanatized pool.
By your own admission you are spending between $10-$30 a week in bleach. Assuming you are using three to nine bottles of bleach a week. For a 25 week swim season you will spend $$250-$750 on bleach alone. I wouldn't call this cheap not to mention going to Sam's to get the bleach regularly was a pain in the arse.
I have used the tablets, BBB, and SWG. For me the SWG is the best method but I'm only one season in.

This will be my second season with the pool and I learned so much last year.
What I like about the Clorox method is that I know what I'm adding to the pool. I feel better with borax, baking soda and chlorine than hundreds of dollars worth of pool store elixirs.
