If you had an A going into the final, our school didn't make you take it. My mom always hated that as she felt we still need to practice studying for and taking exams to better prepare us for college.

Considering grades in high school are often inflated by turning in homework and bonus points, it actually makes some sense because that isn't typically the case in college.

I'd just make the makeup a letter grade harder.

Um, so if they have no skills or education and can't find a job, where do you think the government assistance money comes from?

It allows the schools to make easier final exams for the dumb students that don't already have an "A". They don't do this in college because they don't teach to the dumb students in class.

Why give them a free hand out when they make zero effort to help themselves? Isn't that essentially how we ended up here to begin with?

Perhaps we should tie public assistance to their dependants grades?

Does that make sense?

I am sure that goes over really well.

Teachers need to apply their subjects to the real world and help the students make relationships to current events and problems. Abstract theory and just reading a geography book to read is just pointless to students.

Those things you mention may be a benefit of the class, but they still won't understand that due to maturity. There are many things in science and math to get excited about. That is what I think is missing.

Also teaching to low standards is a horrible problem in Louisiana public education.

It was actually from a young teacher I had when I was at southeastern. Since I moved to LSU I've heard nothing but bad things about the Econ department here so I'm glad I knocked out all my econs at selu

Well, that is really a function of having a poor education system. High school shouldn't be exclusively college prep as not every student goes to college.

I like the German system where you have to test into the college prep track. Lower performing students go into the job skills track. Alas, people don't think it is fair. This makes zero sense as you can dumb down education, but you can't really dumb down what it takes to perform a highly skilled job.

And we continue to enable it and even expand it by spreading the belief everyone should go to college. That only floods the market with a supply of unqualified college students, jacking up the price for the qualified ones.

I like the German system, but with the PC utopia going on in schools you'll never get that passed.

Slightly different circumstances as Germany is a free college system so it makes sense that they would have control on where a person goes career wise.

Wasn't Obama pushing a free Junior College system?

I think the issue we run into is closing doors too early for people when we decide a kids future in highschool. We just do a shitty job of actually closing the door after highschool by enabling dumb student loans and having low college entrance requirements.

Additionally Louisiana highschool education is nowhere near college prep.

So I agree about not everyone is college material, but I don't think that should be preached at the highschool level.

There is some truth to that, but there are people now that go into a trade after school and make a decent living. Some of these people later go to college, and often do better than more traditional students. I saw this all the time with my students going to college on the GI Bill.

Idk but half the dipshits I graduated high school with think college should be free for everyone and that its a basic human right and will block anyone that tells them how dumb they are (politely of course)

I think this is how it should be. Get out of school, leave fantasy land, and learn to live on your own and figure out what skills will get you ahead. That mindest is night and day with the average freshman entering college.

From my experience most teachers don't allow that. Usually only one make up test per semester or like some of my eng teachers no make ups unless dean approved reason for missing.

I'd like to see more AP and college credit available during high school. Identify talented kids younger and allow them to take community college courses starting at the freshman level. Imagine taking 1-2 courses per semester while in 9-10 grade with more your junior and senior year.

You could walk into Lsu with 60 hours taking actual college major courses your first semester. Instead of 18 hours you could take 6-9 hours and focus on each course. This would also allow more opportunities for internships and co-ops before graduating leading to better job opportunities.
