As soon as my kid hit the age of 8, I made sure he had a cell phone AND a bluetooth neck piece.

I got mine in 9th grade but that was in like 1995.

I say get your kid a phone that isn't a smart phone as soon as they're responsible enough to take care of it.

Yeah the non-smart phone is the best option.

Being a young child with a phone is the new latchkey kid

It's none of my business what other people do with their children. Mine won't have a smart phone before the 8th grade, but he will have one of the phones that you can program numbers for, including parents and 911. They don't have messaging or web browsing capability, but they are cell phones and there's nothing wrong with them.
This phone on Amazon is made, specifically, for small children. Today the only homes that usually have landlines are those with elderly people. Kids need a means to make calls when necessary and there are plenty of limited capability phones in which parents can program the only numbers that a child is allowed to dial.

Up to the parents. Some kids can handle one at 7, others not til they are 15.

Got a 9 year old with one, a 12 year old without one

Mine get their own phones when they can pay the bill themselves. I have a flip phone without internet they use when they go out. It can only be used for calls/text.
I hate going to a event and every kid there is blindly looking into a phone. Why the hell do they even go if they don't WATCH the event. Saying you get you kid a phone so they won't be the odd man out is a poor parenting choice. Hey... all the other kids are doing spice so I got my kid a bag, dont want little Timmy to feel left out

we got one for my son when he reached sixth grade because he had to start riding his bike or walking to school. We did not want to pay for day care for an 11 year old before and after school.
He stays at home in the morning after we leave for work then rides his bike to school, and he gets home in the afternoon before we do.
We want him to send a text and let us know when he gets to school and when he gets home and also just to contact us if anything is wrong.
He is now in seventh grade. We have restrictions setup on content he can view on his phone and he has limitations on when he is allowed to sit and play on his phone. He is also not allowed to have it upstairs in his room.
As long as a parent acts like a parent, it is not a bad idea or trashy for a middle school child to have a phone.

I think it's ridiculous. You want to have the kid that gets made fun of for being the only one without a phone?
Because being made fun of presents a much grater emotional risk than early exposure to pornography...right?
ETA...didn't see your post below where you claimed to be joking...nevermind.

Petition to "Wait Until 8th [grade]" to buy cell phones
I ended up getting my now 6th grader a phone and as a result, her little sister also received one. My service provider offered the 4th line for "free" so to speak and we only pay $100 for all 4 lines unlimited everything.
That said, in order to get the phones, both had to sign a "contract" with us (mom and dad) agreeing to the rules and stipulations that we set forth. Weekdays, phones and all electronic devices are to be put up by 8 p.m.
And no social media until they reach the age of at least 14 at which we will evaluate again to determine if we believe they are mature enough to handle it without it becoming a distraction.
The girls are about 7 months into their agreement with us thus far and to date, there have been no issues. In some ways, they are learning more about responsibility and guidelines.
Oh, and they also understand that they are NEVER to greet a person when on the phone as this is a sign of disrepecks in our house. The phone must be put up when entering a place of business, family or friend's house.

No. But putting some arbitrary number on it like this petition is stupid. There's no such thing as "one size fits all" parenting.

Does it say anywhere in the OP that it has to be a smart phone? Did I say anywhere it would be a smart phone?
Regardless, what stopping them from seeing stuff like that on a desktop/laptop? I'm sure I'm not the only person that found the "bad" sites when I hit puberty.

I agree, but I didn't need an online petition to tell me how to be a decent parent.

Think my nephew got his first iPhone at 9 or 10, he is about to be 14 and seems to be turning out just fine
