but I didn't need an online petition to tell me how to be a decent parent.

I'm failing to see why a kid with a cell phone equals bad parenting.

This is a great strategy. What we plan to do is let them have one when they are old enough to need to be picked up after practices/after school activities in case something goes wrong or they need to be picked up sooner. But as soon as they get home it's going on the top shelf

No smart phone, no unmonitored computer until they're in High School.

No. But putting some arbitrary number on it like this petition is stupid.
We put a number on just about everything a kid does.

There are valid reasons why some kids need to communicate with their parents, none of those involves needing access to the web.

Kids are making fun of you because you dont have a phone? Heres a phone, Snapchat? Sure. Instagram? Why not.

I know of two families in our neighborhood that dont have devices for their kids. We know them well. But anyone else could spot them because their kids are outside playing and goofing off all damn day.

I agree as to smartphones, but I gave my daughter a cell phone without data as soon as we had to start dropping her off and leaving her at practice for extra curricular activities.

Social media is one of the worst things happening to this generations youth.

I fail to see what's hysterical about it. Yeah I know they are going to want to use it at al hours of the day and night but you restrict it. Don't let them get addicted to it. shite it's hard enough now and they are little, but you have to lay some ground rules

I dont call it bad parenting. I call it happy parenting. People keep thinking that making a kid happy is the goal.

I assume you mean "we" as in your wife and you. That's fine. A sweeping, arbitrary number for all kids is stupid.

Again, who said anything about a smart phone?

I didn't say all of that, but cool I guess.

My wife's sisters all grew up with cell phones from a young age and all 3 played/currently play varsity level sports (one about to go to a D1 college to play) and were outside way more than inside.

Just having a phone has no bearing on how a kid acts.

There are a lot of non-smartphone options for kids that work great.

I think it is a great idea for the kid to have a phone, especially with the lack of landlines out there these days.

Good luck with that. And is high school the magic time that looking at porn is OK?

Take your logic elsewhere, it's not welcome in this thread.

You're a bad parent if you give your kid a phone.

So you cant think of a single societal rule where we say "if you reach THIS age, you get to do this" Driving, voting, drinking, school?

Apparently so.

Stuff happens all the time that can result in the kid being in a position where he needs to get in touch with a parent immediately. The parent can't be with him 100% of the time. I want the kid prepared to call someone.

That has nothing to do with deciding when a child can have a phone. Or do you think this should be a law?

And as far as I'm concerned, driving should be skill-based, not age-based. The drinking age should correspond with voting/selective service eligibility. So you're not making great points to me.

8th grade is still way too young for a phone.

When my daughter gets old enough I'm going to get her that watch that can make calls to pre-programmed numbers.
