Pepper SprayPosted by SouthGATide on 3/29/13 at 6:42 am
Want to get some for my wife to carry. Would appreciate recommendations. Key chain, fog type, size, etc?? We were in New Orleans last weekend and ran in to a situation that has prompted my interest. 2 young scum bags at first trolley stop on St Charles began acting suspicious and one got way to close - acted like he might try and grab wife's purse (probably shouldn't have been carrying it anyway, but). She noticed and I noticed. She moved behind me and I looked the kid right in the eyes and he backed off. Others began gathering to wait for the trolley and there were just too many witnesses for these 2 to take the chance. I figure pepper spray would be a good thing to have in situations like that.
The biggest thing for her is to understand that when she is out in an area where she may need pepper spray is to HAVE IT READY. She will not have time to get it from her purse or find it on her key chain in an attack.
Pepper spray is most useful as a threat. The actual use of pepper spray is a mixed bag. If you don't get the perp right in the face, it's just going to be a irritating cloud of pepper which will affect people all around, depending on the wind, and possibly piss the guy off without really hindering him. Nevertheless, it's better than nothing.
1) If you carry it, practice being able to get to it quickly. Once a guy pulls a gun or puts his hands on you, it's too late.
2) once you pull it out, don't hide it. The purpose is to create a distraction and dissuade a would be attacker. Don't point it menacingly until necessary, but make it plain that your got it in your hand. In many circumstances, it's useful to announcr that you have pepper spray and you're prepared to use it.
All of the above advice is about the "threat of pepper spray" which is its most effective use. Therefore, the type of pepper spray is less important.
3) If you need to use it, spray a full 2 second blast and paint the perps face up and down. And then get away. The whole point of it is to cause a distraction to create separation.
4) Fog type is best, since it wont "wash out" at close range. Non-alcohol base is best so it wont catch a smoker on fire. If you can get Cap Stun, it's the best, but as stated earlier, most of the time, the type doesn't matter if you know when to use it and when not to use it.
