I am the same way. I have a horrible endurance for running, and I don't find it enjoyable. I much prefer riding a bike or swimming for exercise. Also do Insanity.

If you are suggesting, quote:so start at a 6.0 mph pace Wouldn't your short term and medium goals be almost the same? quote:Goals? Short term- 30 minutes without stopping at your training heart rate. Medium range- aim for a 5k

Well, in the beginning, he may not be able to run at a 6.0 mph pace for very long. So a good short term goal would be to go for 30 minutes without stopping. But after reading more from the OP, he sounds like he's in decent enough shape. This was more geared for someone in poor shape.

well shite if you can run 1/2 a mile in 3 mins you're doing better than most people. of course you're getting out of breath. try slowing down a little for longer distances.

I would highly recommend setting a goal for yourself. Sign up for a local 5k or something so you have something to aim for.

Run at a comfortable pace. You should be able to maintain a conversation. Don't worry about pace. If you can't maintain a conversation you are running too fast, regardless of the pace.

Don't be afraid to walk/run as you get into it. The couch to 5k was a good idea. If you get winded stop, pick out a land mark about 100 yards or so out, walk that far and start running again.

I guess the main results I'm focusing on are conditioning and muscle tone. Bulking up isn't my goal, but I do see how it's easier to gain muscle first then trim down second. I may decide to swim instead because it worked in the past, and is easier on the body.

if you control every little aspect of your diet, you can extremely limit the amount of fat you add on while building muscle.

I was thinking the same thing. He's just now getting in to running and is running 6 min/mile repeats. My first suggestion would be to slow it down...a lot.

Yeah for whatever reason sprinting for 1/10 of a mile is way easier for me than jogging just 1. I think HIIT may be what I'm looking for.

HIIT is in a weird way fun because it feels like a roller coaster.

Well no damn wonder you are tired. If you're new to running there is no reason to be going at this pace.

Slow it down. Try running a couple miles at a 8:30-9 pace and see how you feel.

I'm new to running long distance, but I've been playing basketball for like 5 years regularly. I'm used to sprinting up and down the court, playing for 3 hours at a time. I'm honestly hoping running will get me into good enough shape to dunk because just being able to grab rim is disappointing when I feel as though I should be able to throw down.

I'm not a rocket scientist but if you ask me it sounds like you need to practice jumping, not running.

1. How long does it take to get into running?

forever if you ask me..... "running", like it's implied, isn't for everyone....

quote:

2. Is it better to run before or after working out?

realistically, despite what the OT Workout Gurus will tell ya, it doesn't really matter... you are trying to create a caloric deficit, and whether you run before or after working out, it doesn't significantly contribute to the deficit.... now, your energy level is different... if you tire easily, i'd work out first, because pushing heavy weights (the more important part of this discussion) increases your metabolism for a time after the work out, as opposed to running, which does not...

quote:

3. What kind of goals should I set in the beginning?

whatever is realistic... if it were me, i'd stick to a distance rather than a time, as a goal....

however, i'd be doing HIIT, rather than distance type of shite, but that's just me... it's burns more calories, and takes less time, both things i'm all about...

my goal is to lose like 5-8lbs of fat, then gain back what I lost with muscle.

tbh, that's a lofty goal.... i know you've heard, by now, that the "last 10 lbs" is the hardest to lose... and there's a reason for that.... the less body mass you have, the harder it becomes to lose weight.... that's the reason really fat fricks can lose a large amount of weight relatively quickly, vs. average size people struggling to lose a couple of pounds...

however, increasing lean body mass (something only lifting weights will do) will give you a larger amount of mitochondria (where calories are burned), which will help you out in achieving your goals...

so basically, you have to build muscle first, then you can lose the weight.... it's not lose then replace...
