OT Watch Gurus, would you pay $1200 for this Rolex? Update in OP

Do you know for a fact that it is legit? If I knew for a certainty that it was real, then I might consider it. If it was coming from someone I didn't know pretty well, I wouldn't pay 1200 for any Rolex for fear that it is a fake, especially since it doesn't work to check out the movements.

It is legit at a very legit auction house. No bids on it yet. They estimate the value is $2000-$5000. Opening bid is $1000 with 20% buyers premium.

Depends. Old GMT's like that with the Pepsi bezel can easily run $4-5k. If it's a legit auction house, I'd get a ton of specific details regarding its condition and what needs repairing.
I would be very very leery about its originality. It may not be "fake" but it may be a frankenwatch.

All it needs is a band, a dial, new bezel, new guts, and a new crystal and it is in perfect shape.

A non working Rolex for $1200 is a good deal if you know what you're getting. If you don't know what you're looking at, and you have to ask if it's a good deal, it probably is not.
I am a huge rolex sub mariner fan and consider myself to be somewhat knowledgeable, I think I would be concerned about buying that watch for $1200 unless I knew the specifics.
It's going to cost $700 just to get an overhaul from Rolex and that's assuming nothing inside is broken or needs to be replaced. Depending on what's causing it to not run, it could be as much as $3,000 not counting the basic overhaul cost.
To put it into perspective I just recently had my wifes 5513 non date repaired. It was $2400 just in parts alone....

It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like an 1675. It's probably legit, and the price is probably in line with what they typically sell for in that condition. I'd plan on having $4,000 in it by the time it's all said and done. It could get even more expensive if you want to wear it on a bracelet and not a strap. Personally I think the chipped bezel insert and patina on the dial is cool so I wouldn't do anything other than get it running. But if you want it to look nice you're going to be spending a lot of money.

That watch looks pretty rough.
Like old cars, you can spend 25% more than they are worth just getting them up to retail.
Just my gut call, others on here are more knowledgeable, I am sure.
