I personally don't like anything other than a metal band. Leather starts to stink, rubber isn't all that comfortable to sleep in, and NATO looks like hammered shite.

I prefer rubber straps over metal. Just looks better IMO, especially on a diver.

That looks nice. A nice leather Nato would probably look nice. Not a nylon one. Makes it look cheap.

Am I weird for having never slept with a watch on? Is that a thing?

That's far from the truth. NO watchmaker will recognize them. They won't allow watchmakers to audit their stocks to even begin the process of certifying them. If you think that's a trustworthy business model then so be it.

If you start spending over $5000 for a watch through them, there's a chance the movement has been swapped out for an "advanced" chinese movement. You won't know until you take it to a dealer and ask them to open it up. This is what a lot of people have run into. Most people don't care; so be it. But you'll never get a real warranty for a reason. If you want to make sure it's real, buy from an authorized dealer

I'm sorry but this is all false. Point me to one legit story of movements being swapped or fake watches being sold

I got an Omega Planet Ocean with the orange bezel a year ago. I really like it.
It is really comfortable for a big watch. I had a Rolex but like this one better.

An expensive watch is not for everyone but I really enjoy mine. Panerai makes some great watches too.

An IWC Portuguese is still on my bucket list. Most of the recommendations you have gotten so far have leaned towards the sports watch end of the spectrum. A Rolex Milgauss or Air King, maybe even a Yachtmaster are all fine choices. The Omega Planet Ocean or Speedmaster are awesome pieces as well.

If you are leaning towards the dress end of the spectrum and would appreciate something on a strap, I highly recommend you look at the Grand Seiko, Glashutte, IWC, Girard Perregaux and Blancpain lineups. They all make beautiful pieces in the 5k-8k range that would make outstanding heirloom pieces for your family.

As stated earlier, you can't go wrong going the AD route, but their are great deals to be had on the watch forums as well. I have bought numerous watches second hand and have yet to be disappointed. As they say, "buy the seller first". It doesn't take long on any of the big sites sales forums to identify a few reputable volume sellers with tons of positive feedback who could provide you with a great deal on the watches we've discussed, or enough of a discount to open up making a deal on something even a little more high end.

Do you have to have something that will be instantly recognizable to every schmo on the street but that 50% will assume was bought on the corner in NYC? Or would you be happy with something less instantly recognizable that will be appreciated by anyone who knows something about watches?

I would never buy grey market for a luxury brand watch.

You get zero manufacturer warranty, and many of them won't even let you pay for service on a grey market.

Jomashop isn't an authorized dealer of anything and they list prices lower than Omega, Rolex, Tudor and Breitling want. In their minds it devalues the brand. Some have the serial numbers removed and some don't. Most can be serviced easily. Some can't. It's up to you to find out. Butt those dealers slam them because they hate that they devalue the brand and don't play the pricing game

I only take mine off to shower and sleep. Fishing, hunting, work, etc all fair game for mine. Granted I wear cheap watches so maybe I would be more careful with a more expensive piece

I have people all the time comment me on my watches, but this thread realllllly makes me feel like a cheap arse and now I'm wondering if people notice my shite quartz movements out in public and talk shite.

many of the watches I have seen and bought (usually second hand though) have had cards stamped from the original dealer. I bought a new in box PAM 111 like this. Many of these dealers have so many watches shoved down their throat and must sell some out the back door.

According to what year you were born a birth year watch is something to consider. Having a nice watch that your child sees you wear everyday is a nice heirloom that will mean something when you pass it down.

Meh. frick em. Do you.

Mine is a $650 marathon auto and I love it. I plan to have a really nice watch one day, but I beat the hell out of this one and it still looks and works great.
