Sprints

Run half mile sprints at the same time (minutes) as your marathon goal.

If you want to run a 3:30 marathon run 3:30 minute half mile sprints

Not at all..of course I pass others but there's a shite ton of others who smoke past me. Yeah I just signed up for the track club here, hopefully I'll meet some avid runners..I only started running because I was bored and it was a stress reliever but I have really enjoyed it since.

To everyone else, he isn't bragging. These are nice times for someone on the verge of getting seriously interested but the track club will have much faster times than this. That's okay, with training you can do it too and they'll show you how

No doubt there are plenty faster. Last triathlon I did a guy ran 5:40 miles for a 10k after averaging 30 mph on the bike and swimming nearly a mile. Obviously people can do it. But they typically don't just have 3 months training, and if they are getting those times, they know that places like the OT aren't going to be that helpful to someone already at that level.

Or you can go low and slow. Never allowing your heart rate to rise above its max and maybe even keep it a few bpm under your max

What's the bpm threshold I should go for. Average is usually 185 range

There are different methods. I use the method of determining threshold heart rate. Run 30 minutes at race pace. Take average of the last 20 minutes. Then set your zones off of that. Z2 is 85-89%. Do your low and slow stuff in zone 2

Do speed oriented workouts on a track. Joining the local track club should do wonders.

Well whatever you do, stick to the OT for your running advice and don't go visit the myriad of other forums based completely on long distance running with an extensive member base that gives an unimaginable amount of shits more about this topic than the OT.

Again, you can run intervals or the total opposite with the slow approach. See what works bc everyone will say they have the key. Those are just two totally different approaches that can and do work for people.

I recommend reading "Born to Run." Great story and really give some knowledge bombs on diets, training and principles that people have such strong beliefs in that are all but not true or proven not to work.

It's all about interval training and hill training. Long runs once per week.

Good call. Lots of people join a running club to do a full or half marathon, hell I did that myself. But although that will definitely boost endurance it doesn't do that much for speed like regular training with a track club.

If you want to be fast you need to build VO2max, and that requires short bursts, wind sprints, intervals, etc. Intensity instead of distance.

Lots of people consider "born to run" a strong training belief that is unproven. But it is a good book. Makes you want to go out and run. And I have since moved to lower drop shoes and like it so far.

Just a quick article on it. Even though I don't agree with the lactic acid comment.

And max heart can be calculated 220-age or u can get a monitor and run. Warm up, run at race tempo, then pick distance and increase your speed every 100m and see what the high recording is at your fastest speed...usually close to your max

16 weeks is the avg. training plan for runners with a solid base. You have that, find a plan and use it.
Do you want to...finish, compete,or win?
Choose your plan accordingly. You will likely average 50-60 miles a week. Do NOT skip rest days. You will get faster.

You are for a marathon for only 3 months training. Read up on heart rate zones
