Don't get caught up in the pace of others at the beginning of the race. Run your race. A lot of people push too hard at the beginning when they see/feel the pace of others and don't finish.

This is good advice.

Do it somewhere else. Course and event group suck.

I was going to do the Oilman up in Conroe in 2 weeks, but training got sidetracked. Decided to build up my bike base over the winter and do one in the spring. I'd rather go back home and do NOLA than Galveston. It's easier for my family since we have family they can be with there while I'm on the course. I've heard both Galveston and NOLA aren't spectacular and heard people got beat the F up on the swim this year in NOLA (luckily I'm a fairly strong, granted not fast, swimmer).

Augusta is apparently tGOAT 70.3 Course.

Grandman Sprint in Fairhope is my favorite short course. (530m swim, 18mi bike, 5k)

Ran it for the first time last year.
Enjoy the sights and the bands along the race.

Be mentally prepared for the long stretch along St. Charles and pray that there isn't wind.
Also, last year was a stand of guys giving out free whiskey shots at mile 13

FIFY.

No, honestly, good job on stepping up to the plate and pursuing this. You'll love the feeling of crossing that finish line, regardless of time.

If I could offer one piece of advice, though, it's this- if you're at a 10:30 pace then just hang back and don't get caught up in sprinting out of the gate. That's the hardest part for runners in their first race. The adrenaline, the natural drive to be away from mobs of people, etc, will break you out of your normal routine.

Also, don't eat or drink anything out of the ordinary the night before the race. Now's not the time to be experimenting with new protein shakes, etc. And for a half marathon you don't really need to carb load.

The best tip I can give is to not really do anything different you didn't do on your long runs. Eat the same breakfast, don't overthink it, eat EARLY the night before so getting down breakfast isn't a struggle. Run the first 1/3 with your head (start smart), the middle 1/3 with your personality (setlle in have fun) and the final 1/3 with your heart (decide about mile 8 if you want to race it or keep having fun).

Couldn't agree with this more.
Had a conversation with a random guy for about 2 miles last year and it's one of my favorite memories from the race.

to beat your goal time - find a chick with a decent arse that's just a hair faster than you and settle in behind her.

Think of it as just another training run, with catering

Longest run to date 11 miles.

Did you maintain pace here, or at least close?
Most people tend to get slower as the race goes on, maybe a difference of 30 seconds per mile is normal between fastest mile and slowest mile . So, try to keep to this or better.

So I'm doing my first half marathon this Saturday (Jazz Half in NOLA). I'm a casual runner (~10:30/mile) and I'm not looking to set any goals other than finishing.

Any suggestions/tips for a fir

My suggestion: learn to run. Build up to racing the distance. Get faster at shorter distances. Then consider a half marathon. Slogging through a two-and-half hour half-marathon sounds fricking miserable.

I've been focusing more on pacing. Been running for about a year and a half now. I have no real desire to break the 10 mile/min mark - I'm built for comfort, not for speed.

I agree with what everyone has said about taking the beginning slow and not letting the adrenaline of the race kick in; that's always the biggest hurdle for me.

Find a comfortable pace right off. Move through the crowd until you find a hottie in little shorts running about the same pace. Fall in a few yards behind and enjoy the view.

Eventually she may speed up or slow down. At that point repeat the process.

ETA: damnit ccard beat me to it

Band aid your nipples...doesn't matter if you've never had issues before. Band aid both of them. Wear some cheap throwaway layers of clothes you can ditch just before the race starts or after it's started. 50 degrees is perfect racing weather for shorts and a singlet or short sleeve shirt, don't overdress but you'll want to be warm waiting for the race to start

Oh, thank the volunteers. Thank as many as
You can.

Liquid Band-Aid FTW. That way you don't look ridiculous through your shirt.

Walk the mile marker water stations starting at about mile 4. These little breaks will help a lot.

Start at the back of the pack. There are so many people at the Jazz marathons that you will be fighting for position and people will be passing you like crazy if you start in the front. Also, you will likely pass some slower people who started in the front, so you will get some boosts of confidence along the way.
