Huh? Is your hypothetical child handling ounces of marijuana? Why would that show up on his record?

Drinking, meanwhile, could get him slapped with a MIP, in which he would have to go through pre-trial diversion; or perhaps a DUI, which is like, a felony and stuff

I've never heard of weed poisoning, but alcohol has claimed a few lives.

Once you're high, there is not much higher one can go. With alcohol, if you keep drinking, you'll die.

A coworker had their son busted. Basically, 911 was called in a dorm for a drunk girl. Cops and EMS show up and take care of drunk girl. She HAS NOTHING TO DO with this kids room. Just another room several doors down. Cops show up and bust this kid and room mates for weed?

Do police have any business in another dorm unless Cheech and Chong smoke is pouring out or a kid runs out screaming " there is weed in there!!l"

This kid got charged. With what I've no idea. But any possession charge I'd have issue with? Why are you searching? Why are you in ANY other dorms?

Thoughts from youngsters? Been 18 years since I've been in a college atmosphere and cocaine was involved so we are talking apples and assholes.

I'm not a parent but I would rather catch my children drinking. I plan on exposing my children to alcohol around the age of 18. No, I will not be giving them a bottle of tequila, nor encouraging them to drink by any means. However, if they want to have a small glass of wine, or a beer at the dinner table sometimes,(legal in the sate of LA) that's fine. I don't want alcohol to be some big and unexplored mystery for my children when they finally live away from me. They're going to drink when they go to college anyway. All of us did.

So many of my classmates went absolutely crazy with alcohol the moment they left home in an act of rebellion. Most of their parents sheltered them so much they had no idea how to handle themselves in social drinking situations.

Smoking. Getting caught with personal amounts of weed these days is about equal legally to getting caught underage drinking anyway, and they're less likely to make a stupid life changing (or ending) decision.

If I had a kid, drinking.

I could legally buy him/her whatever alcoholic beverage s/he wanted, and as long as s/he consumed it in my home, I would be protected under the law.

Even if I lived in a state where marijuana is legal, it is still illegal under Federal law. As a Federal employee that would be too much risk to take (I could lose everything after 30 years in).

Considering I could drink at 18, my answer will be drinking.
