Also, my older son has a history of migraines since he was very young. He had white matter changes on his MRI, too. The neuro explained that it was just a result of years of migraines and nothing serious.

That would be your first thought in a 30 year old? That's not very likely in this case.

Occam's Razor...

Granted, this is usually found in older patients, but it is not that uncommon in younger patients (MS would be higher on differential). If he is a smoker, has diabetes and/or drinks a lot of alcohol, this can contribute to these MRI findings. Of course, without my own history and exam, it's impossible to make a diagnosis.
So do not take my comments for what they are worth...not much other than open discussion about a disease process. I am sure his neurologist will give him answers he seeks.

Hold on Doc. Nobody has suggested surgery just yet. Not even sure what's wrong.

I got my MRI results back today and the nurse referred me to a neurologist because they found "white matter changes." Can anyone let me know how bad this is? The nurse couldn't give me much info and I asked for the doctor to call me to explain things. The only thing she said was that it's odd for a 30 year old to have this, she said it's more common in older people. TIA

Nurses aren't allowed to explain shite, neither are the actual technicians.

The doctor didn't call to explain things because he probably doesn't know. I wouldn't expect an internal medicine doctor to be able to interpret a brain MRI with a non specific finding like white matter changes.

Agree with this.

Additionally MRIs of brain are typically over read and don't always correlate with symptoms experiences. But better to overread than to miss something and have liabilit I suppose
