white matter changes isn't to specific
could be anything from a stroke to a demyelinating disease.
some of which can be serious. i doubt you had a stroke, you would have known it and usually TIAs won't have white matter changes.

I was medically discharged and only receive minimal VA benefits (medical benefits excluded). I got screwed when they discharged me back in 2004-2005 and I appealed at the time but lost, because they said it wasn't a life threatening injury and that I "chose" not to have the procedure at the time. Won't go into details but there was a chance (better than 35%) I wouldn't have been able to have kids if I had had it done.

Be though as it may, but who recommended patient see a neurologist? Whoever that dr is should have properly explained things to the patient at the same time of informing him of his neurological referral.
I'm not suggesting that a nurse should have done that as they usually don't have a clue.

Do these exercises:
1) Stick your tongue out and wiggle it around
2) Slap the side of your face.. Did it hurt?
3) Jump up and down. Did you fall?
4) Stick your tongue out again and say "rubber baby bitter batter"
If you do all that and everything seems fine congratulations you are an idiot.

I would assume the Dr ordered the nurse to call the patient and tell him that the dr recommends he see a Neuro. She should have just left it at that. If the patient ask why then the nurse should have said " I'll have the dr call you". Unless it was a NP or a PA.

I'm not an idiot, just thought maybe someone on here might have known someone with this or a doctor might have had some info. Thanks everyone for the info provided, just gonna have to wait and see. Have a good weekend.

"White Matter Changes" is a pretty general statement. Like someone else said, it could be anything from a demylenating process to an infarct. If you don't mind me asking why did you get the MRI in the first place?

It'll be OK. It's not like you need your brain to keep posting here.

I am proof of that.

Agree with the others. White matter changes is very nonspecific. Stay off the interwebs, it will just scare the shite out of you. Keep trying your doctor.

Get a copy of your report and call the radiologist if your doctor isn't helping.
Posted on 6/20/14 at 5:28 pm to RadTiger
The doctor didn't call to explain things because he probably doesn't know. I wouldn't expect an internal medicine doctor to be able to interpret a brain MRI with a non specific finding like white matter changes.

Joey, the brain is made up of two different types of matter white and gray. White matter does a lot of the complex neuro work in the brain for us. When somebody reads an MRI as white matter changes it means that the white matter is usually degrading. This is pretty normal in elderly people, that's what she said it's unusual for you being so young to have it. But it's very nonspecific. There's about 1 million things that could cause it. Anything from MS to a TBI. Were you wounded on the service?

Your MRI may even need to be repeated too.
