this. Give them a chance to match, but if not, accept the new position. With slightly better pay and better benefits, the new job is better for your family.

And don't think for a second your company wouldn't think twice about firing you if they downsized.

I left for 7% 3 months ago. Many other factors besides satisfaction at job. Free Healthcare, larger 401k contributions, larger annual bonus and much more attractive career path did it for me

I just went through a similar situation but the percentage increase in salary was higher.

Sit down with your current boss and give him a chance to keep you. If you're that integral to his team, I don't see 8% as a problem. That's IF you are good with everything else about your job.

If he doesn't, leave. Seems simple enough to me.

8 points is pretty small. The benefits would have to be way better.

They'll match or exceed if they want to keep you.
You only get to play this card once so make it count.

I know. The benefits are way better though. Enough to add at least 2 more points onto that in real dollars (cheaper health care, more holidays, pension plan, etc).

Thanks everyone for the advice. I told the boss today that I'm leaving and he was very supportive. Maybe I was just being overly cautious because he is a nice guy. I just hate to leave him in such a time.

Give him as much notice as possible. That's the most important thing. You can even offer to work Saturdays or evenings for a couple of extra months.

With how bad the economy is, there are tons of good people out there who are unemployed or underemployed, so you're not going to be leaving him hanging.

They won't give you notice when they can your arse. I have mixed feelings about notice. They haven't done me any favors since I've been employed here. Three years no raise.

I should probably just walk off the MFer next week when I turn in my notice.

Sounds like you aren't convinced you want the new job.

Sounds like your boss will be giving you more than an 8% raise to keep you.

I recently took job for a, albeit very small, pay cut. I'm on the road and tons of things aren't as good as my last job, but I wanted to work with my current boss and my last one pissed me off. I didn't turn it into a bidding war I just walked away.

I've never taken a job for the money, meaning I could have always made more doing something else, and I hope I'm never in the position to have to. Life doesn't have to be that way.

This.

And this.

Your responsibility is to provide for your family. As long as you handle it professionally it should not be an issue.

Can guarantee that you will be let go in a heartbeat should the company need to cut costs.

It's a business decision. Do what's best for you. He'll either understand or be a dick, and in the later case who cares what condition you leaving puts him in.

If I were changing just for money (moving to the same position but at a different company) it would have to be for more than 7 percent. That's what I meant by agreeing to YF's statement.

There are other factors that could lend to me moving jobs and doing so without a substantial increase in salary(mostly location or opportunities for my wife).

Yea, I just value fulfillment in a job very highly. I want to get smarter and better and the second you try to frick with that as a boss of mine I'm going to fight my way out of it. If I can't then I'll shut my damn mouth and work, if I can better the situation, in my mind at least, I'm gone. Money be damned. I'm fairly lucky in the sense that I'm happy with my salary range and my wife works hard as well.

If your boss won't match 10%, then you're not very valuable to your current employer.
