Offered a job but don't want to burn bridges with current boss

I was offered a good job by another company. I'm currently not super happy with my current job, but wouldn't say I'm unhappy either. This new job seems to be a better fit for me and my family, and has better pay (8%) and better benefits.
My dilemma is that there are 3 people on my team right now that support my boss. 1 person is on maternity leave, and the other person is transferring to a site across the globe, but will still be working on the same stuff. However she won't be as accessible. We have annual planning coming up in October, and it is a huge process that I am a part of. My boss and I have a good relationship, but I feel like he may hate me if I leave before annual planning?
Any advice would be appreciated.

You gotta do what's right for you and yours. If your boss doesn't understand that he's not worth working for.

it is business. if you like the place so much, give them an opportunity to match or exceed
any boss should understand and appreciate you being up front with them

Stop being Beta and go get what is yours.

What's the problem? Be a man and discuss this with your boss.

His problem. Not yours. People leave jobs every day.
Worry about yourself and your family.

Do what is best for you. Just make sure you're confident the new job will keep you happy.
My wife was in a similar situation, but with a much more substantial bump in pay. She'll be giving her notice on Friday. We'll see how it goes.

you need to get over, in this world you better look out for yourself first...if he can't accept the fact that you have better opportunities for you then he isn't a very good friend.

Always keep your family first. Help with the transition but don't pass up a chance at a better opportunity.

Solid advice right here.

I'm in a similar situation.
I'm staying because they've shown me loyalty and respect with a recent promotion, and the connections will pay off down the road.
My time will come.

you can't base your decisions off of the company's needs
if they don't need you anymore I can promise they won't base their decision off your personal needs

Standard procedure is 2 weeks notice but 4 weeks is typically acceptable if you're important. Acceptable meaning your new employer should understand that you're important and honorable enough to not want to leave your old company hanging. Discuss options with your new boss as well. He may say take 2 months if necessary to leave on good terms. No worth while company wants to burn bridges or ask their employees to burn bridges.

You think they'd give two shits if they canned you?

Not worried about that. She gets paid for unused PTO which will take her to the new job's starting date.

yeah 8% wouldn't be enough for me to make a move unless I hated my current job

friendship is one thing, but business is business. Let your boss counter/match the existing offer. Otherwise, take care of yourself and go for the other job. That ember of dissatisfaction is likely to grow and you may regret not taking this offer down the road.
Unfortunately, in today's business world, there is no loyalty and you have to be selfish regarding your own future. I believe companies are completely selfish and self-serving. I wouldn't let a sense of loyalty ruin a good opportunity.
