Yeah! Leave the carrying of the guns into stadiums to the criminals!

Oh, wait...

Seriously. I don't have a problem if this was the case before. The NFL it it's infinite wisdom decided to ban them without any incidents occurring.

Par for the course, I suppose.

I would feel safer that if there was a threat trained people who could handle it would already be in the stadium.

I want to be clear, are you saying would would feel safer if off duty police were armed in NFL stadiums when they enter as regular fans?

For my money, that's a very strong no way. Not because they are police...though let's be honest, I do tend to think an off duty cop is FAR more likely to draw their weapon in a situation than a regular guy with a concealed carry license, but because I think it's a bad situation to mix the emotions and very real possibility of alcohol with not only firearms but the ABILITY to yank it out based on their authority got get involved. I'd rather them be FANS, and let the guys being paid to maintain security be responsible for that.

They do have a say in the matter. Doesn't mean their rules will trump local and state laws.

Apparently the LAPD motto is now an oath

All of this. There's really no reason for them to have one. If they aren't on duty they're just like every other person at the game.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea but there is just too much potential for a terrible situation. What happens to the first cop that gets a picture taken of him drinking a beer with his sidearm visible? There's too much of a grey area to allow some to carry and others to not. Plus, the chances of needing a gun inside an NFL stadium are slim to none.

I don't think anyone should handle or carry a firearm if they plan on drinking, including cops.

However, if they are not getting drunk, then i am all for some extra security when masses of people congregate.

So what, they don't shoot enough citizens on duty and now want a better chance to get some off duty?

Off duty police officers are in violation of the law if they drink and carry just as you are.

You can't. I know there are potential risks, but I just wouldn't be terribly offended if they were allowed. I do tend to have a little more trust of police than the average poster it seems though.

ETA: if they are allowed to carry elsewhere where the possibility of alcohol consumption is present, why not in the NFL stadium?

What many of you fail to realize is that cops are allowed to carry anywhere off duty because those they have arrested don't care whether they are on or off duty when looking for payback. I am sure some of you will say that comeswith the job but I totally disagree. An officer should be allowed to protect himself from criminals he has arrested. If the officer wants to drink at the game he must leave his weapon a home as that is the way the law is written.

seems pretty reasonable to me. Also didn't really think of the retribution angle, very good point though.

The NFL does not own most of the stadiums, if any. Did you read what I posted above? Do you believe off duty cops have no right to protect themselves? In addition to low pay and long hours you would put them in a position where they are unable to protect a wife or child while out in public and someone they have arrested decides to get payback?

If regular citizens aren't allowed to carry, then off duty cops, AKA citizens, can't carry either. Sorry.
