ETA: the dyes in most dog foods make our dog breakout

Shocker...you go for the big fancy brand. I feed our dogs dog food. Whatever is on sale. If they don't eat it they will see it again...and again, until they are hungry enough. If it worked for me and my siblings it will work for a dog.

What you're advocating is like feeding your kid chicken fingers every night and justifying it by saying it fills him up and saves you a few bucks every month rather than giving him a more nutritious meal...but it's ok because his pediatrician said white meat is healthy.

I'm not advocating anything. I agree the owner should do the best for their pet- within their means. I am disputing your suggestion that all vets are less qualified than nutritionists when it comes to dog food. I'm also calling bullshite on your premise that Purina, Iams, Hills , etc. produce products that are detrimental to your pet. You dismiss these products out of hand because of your experience a decade ago with your own pet. Your bias is palpable. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, but painting with such a broad brush is intellectually dishonest as well as irresponsible.
And BTW, who is the animal nutritionist you consulted to form your conclusions? What was his/her qualifications? Most are employed by companies like the ones you seemingly revile. Yet you are convinced that they are superior to most DVMs.

Hills invests heavily in the veterinary industry to build up loyalty for future recommendations. Most vet students receive discounts and samples. As well hills promote many scholarships for vet students along with even stipends to pay for research.

Is it wrong? No, I don't think so. I would say it is very similar to the pharmaceutical industry.

In the end they make more money, but everyone has plenty of opportunity to educate themself

Started with Fromm's and he started losing his hair. Pulled him off thinking he was allergic to chicken and started on Science Diet. His coat started to shine but we were worried about the lack of a pure meat as the main ingredient. Tried Blue Buffalo and he started farting more. We just started Simply Nourish. Everything we get is Lamb and I put some fish oil and yogurt in his food.

Before I even clicked, I knew this thread was going to be a "who takes better care of their dogs" fight.

Mine eats:

Because he has an allergy to... well, something. Best guess is grains because all of the typical brands make his ears itch to the point that he starts whimpering as he scratches. This stuff is inexpensive and on Amazon Prime.

Dude is allergic to everything. I think it's a grain allergy and he seems to do better on this.

Other people here have corroborated vets do not receive the nutrition education people seem to think they do. And yes, vets do receive incentives from the big companies to push certain foods. But you know better...

My position, as was clearly stated before, is that they cut corners and make sub par food, which they absolutely do. You cannot refute that with anything other than your subjective (and ill formed) opinion. I know some pets do ok on that food, however, a lot don't and those owners can be left in the dark by their vet about better food options.

I dismiss the products because the companies are intentionally selling sub par food to increase their margins. For the record, my pet died within the last two years. The decade you keep citing was the part time job I worked in college you already dismissed. What I'm saying is not "intellectually dishonest." You just disagree with it because you haven't delved into it as I did with my guy 2 years ago. You're taking what those marketing departments at Iam's, Hills, etc. are selling hook, line, and sinker. Congrats.

It's the same price as the Buffalo Basics -- maybe a bit cheaper considering the Buffalo bag is a few pounds lighter I think.
