The same graffiti was reported on memorials in Charleston; Baltimore; Austin, Texas; Asheville, North Carolina; and Richmond, Virginia. No arrests have been made.

Just went there recently for vacation. frick that place, nothing but a bunch of white progressive gypsys, hobos, and hippies. Looks like 90 percent of the city doesn't work.

Well for starters there was still slavery in northern states. Slavery wasn't outlawed in the North until three years into the Civil War. If slavery was the root cause as you proclaim, then why was this allowed and why did secession occur 5 years before the abolishment of slavery? Who really has revisionist history?

See post by AwesomeSauce above. The war was due to protecting states rights as opposed to a stronger central government. Yes, slavery played a role due to the economy of the south being dominated by cotton and tobacco. However, the root cause was the government powers.

By the way, I am a Yankee and couldn't care less about the Confederate Flag. Sure, rednecks embrace it, but it's a part of the South's history being able to stand up and fight for their beliefs.

Anyone who has lived in the Northeast will tell you that in many cases the prejudice against blacks is much worse.

And do you really put MLK statue in the same fricking boat as Confederate Memorials? What level of delusion do you have to have in order to make that work in your head ?

Sure- one defended his country, the other his people. That's a compliment to MLK by the way.

Why is defending your country such an ugly phrase?

How do not see how illogical this is? I don't get how people are saying this campaign is about erasing history. There needs to be more museums and memorials about slavery. We tend to study and celebrate the martial aspect of the war without looking at roots of it. We need more museums and monuments reminding people about the evils of slavery and oppression of blacks and less celebrating treacherous confederate generals trying to win a war to protect that evil institution.

Your myopia is annoying.

Do you think the North wasn't culpable at all? You don't think the North benefited from the slave trade at all? Hell man- the North was trading with the South DURING the Civil War. You think the South was growing all of that cotton for themselves??

Not every Northerner was a staunch abolitionist. Far from it.

The North was as racist as the South. For a quick example, look up the NYC draft riots of 1863.

I'm sure we'll see Obama on TV condemning the vandals and their activity shortly. Or not.

The North was moving away from slavery due to the differing economic contributions. The south relied on cotton that benefited from cheap labor. The North benefited from the growth of cities and the industrial revolution much earlier.

Doesn't mean it was any less racist. I know there were many slave owners in the North that were very much against abolition.

Maybe he needs to be reminded-

SLAVERY EXISTED IN THE NORTH FOR THE DURATION OF THE WAR AND AFTER.

That's a convenient little fact that most like to forget.

Wish I had more than 1 upvote for this post. Thanks for the logical factual explanation.

Problem is the people who need to learn these facts will never read it. And if they did read it they would dismiss it with some revisionist counter argument.

Those who equate the secession to slavery are completely uneducated. High school history courses teach federally and state mandated revisionist history where the victor rewrites the occurence. Anyone who has spent any time in history classes focusing on the first 100 years of US history by professors who dedicated their life to the period know that too many obvious facts completely dispell most of what is taught in high school classes. What should fire people up is the fact that these are federal landmarks on the national registry celebrating American veterans as decreed by congress and the potus when they were erected.
