What is going on in Nola this weekend besides fireworks and essence fest? I'm driving down for the weekend.

Last year city park had a cool plant sale haha

Recommendations appreciated. ;)

1. Drinking
2. Eating (at the restaurants that aren't closed for their "4th of July" vacation)
3. Nut sweating

Before you go, be able to tell the difference between a gunshot and firework.

There's music & fireworks July 3 at the Uncle Sam Jam in Lafreniere Park in Metry, a town where you can still smoke in bars.

Expect Uptown/Mid City/Lakeview bars to be packed because everyone is trying to avoid downtown...for reasons

Nah, most of the Essence crowd stays around the Convention Center. The fireworks display has two barges - one in front of the Convention Center, and one in front of Jax Brewery.

Expect a normal weekend crowd in the Quarter. We've been going for years without any problems.

This.

If the OP does need to get away from downtown, City Park does have a fireworks deal with music, etc on the night of the 3rd. Seems pretty cool.

Not all bars in Metairie allow smoking. Some owners are smart and self-ban smoking to the outside patio.

ETA: Knuckleheads is one of them.

Yeah, I never had any problems that weekend. It might be either on bourbon than usual, but I never went to bourbon unless I needed to break a slump.

I saw grab a six pack or bottle of something, find a place on the rocks by the river to sit, and get a front row fireworks view.

But at least they have the choice to do so.. N.O. city council screwed the pooch on that one...

Essence is not a bad crowd at all. Seems to be good folks. I think there used to be some of the thug homies who liked to cruise up and down Canal St over the weekend and would block traffic, but I don't think that even happens anymore.

Yes, a lot of restaurants close for this weekend and part of the week. I only attribute a small part of that to the Essence Fest.

Yea, I've never heard of the 'Essence crowd' causing any problems other than the supposed shortchanging of waiters perhaps. This isn't the Bayou Classic- Essence goers tend to be well to do.
