re: Negotiating salary for first job

Just giving the guy a push in that he shouldn't feel compelled to immediately settle for whatever is first thrown at him.

Ejecting from this thread, too many betas.

Keep reminding them you have people skills gawd dammit.

First offer with plenty of time remaining: just tell them thanks and you'll think about it. Other fish to f*ck or whatever you kids say these days. Then ask if he wants to be in your newest Harlem Shake video.

Hell just by nature of it being the status quo mentality of the industry I serve, hardly.

There was absolutely nil that was unsound in the OP. If this isn't recognized, not my problem.

If you actually graduated as an engineer, do not take a job 14k under the average. The only way I would take the job is if they were willing to train you in an organized training program. My first offer was low and that's what I told my boss. They bumped up my starting pay to about where it should be. 1k less than the average.

Delay accepting the offer as long as possible and try to expedite the other interviews. If you are a valuable candidate they will be willing to help you out. If you get a better offer go back and say "I have a higher offer from company x, but would prefer to work here. Can you match it?"

How much below the average did they offer?

National average or average of the region? Not sure what to base my average off of.

From my experience, unless you make the money coming in the door, you won't make it. A 5% annual increase is NOT the norm. Like another poster said, most above average performers barely get a merit increase that can keep up with inflation and that's never guaranteed. Typically, the only way to get a decent raise is to get a promotion, switch to another department, or take a position at another company entirely. Do not expect to make substantially more than your initial salary anytime soon after being hired.

That being said, one area that some companies can have some wiggle room to negotiate with is vacation. If you are close to your salary requirements but not quite there, you can maybe ask for an extra week of vacation. Many employers can do this on the sly.

This will not be your last job.. Take the job that will look best on a resume and get you a great second job starting salary.

OP, if you want to guarantee that you will get the big $$$, be sure to wear this when you meet with them. They will know you mean business.

Engineering field if it matters.

Every job I have had or been offered, the intial salary offer was just a starting point for negotiations. IF they want you, they will negotiate. It might not be a lot, and they might say sorry and that's the offer, but I would definitely ask. It's a business transaction for them. Of course the first offer is going to be low, so make a counter offer and see where it goes. As long as your counter offer is not insultingly high, you'll be fine.
