He is 20 years old, currently in a welding trade school. He has zero direction in life and he thinks this would be good for him. While I do agree, he is also not very smart and did not do well in normal high school. I don't see him doing very well on any tests that they would have to take before hand, which means he could get a bad placement(is this how it works?). The older brother in me thinks this would be good for him. But, the older brother in me is also scared for him and want him safe and not on a ship fighting(if that were to happen).

What is the process like?
The navy is relatively safe isnt it?
If he scores low on the test, will he still be 'safe' and not first in line to get sent over?

Literally have zero idea on the military.

Any input is appreciated, thank you!

It's his choice, support him as a brother should

He could be a welder in the Navy, right?

Let him make his own choices. Sounds like a good direction for him to take.

If we ever get in a war with Poseidon, he might be screwed. Desert war against an enemy with no Navy? He should be fine.

If he has low scores he may not get the best rate choices but he could still find something he'd like I would think. He should do it. If he can get in.

maybe he will score high enough on the asvab especially the mechanical section.

If he is set on it. He should take a practice test obviously

I support him in any decision he's made. I just want him to be educated before he does so. I also want to educate myself so that I can assist him. I need to strongly restate that he is not very bright.

What do you think the "armed" services are, baw?

Go to a recruiter, take the ASVAB (or retake it) and get qualified for a military speciality (whatever the Navy calls it - "rating" or whatever)

So is the USAF. So is the US Army. So is the USMC.

It is places that are unsafe.

Scores just limit (or expand) his options on his iniital military specialty. "First in line" - is by unit, not by individual. If he gets assigned to a ship or activity that is deployed, his scores do not matter.

And - I'll ask you this question. Would you rather get it in an elevator in lower Manhattan, completely unaware or on the battlefield with a weapon in your hand, facing the enemy, with comrades to the left and right of you - because I know how your little brother would probably answer that question.

The navy is a pretty good place to be a welder, in all honesty.

Remind him that it's not gay if you're underway.

Then show support and go and talk to a recruiter with him.

They could use some welders and if he works his arse off he can come back and get an inspector license and do pretty well.

Just make sure he sticks with the Navy or Air Force and he'll be fine. It's good experience and you should be encouraging it. If he talks about joining the Marines or Army, strongly discourage it, he'll come back a douchebag.

That would be outstanding. This would be a great way for him to find his "way" in life I am positive. He has no concept of life or how to do things on his own. It would be a very big shock to him as well.

He's 7 hours away. I am going to talk to a recruiter up here by myself to get information.

Do you think he could thrive in a military setting? The more I read the more I think the military might be his best chance. What other options does he have?
