I've never been to the BR Zoo, but I imagine it's a lot like the Jackson Zoo. The Jackson Zoo is in the middle of the ghetto of West Jackson. You basically keep the animals in the cages to protect them from the public. I think some stray dogs got in there once and started killing animals. It needs to be moved but they are so broke.

Went like a year or 2 ago. The animals were just laying on concrete just getting blasted by the sun. It's a fricking shame. I was the only one at the zoo as well. Do they make any money??

The zoo was amazing 15 years ago. They've been avoiding major changes and updates knowing that it needs to move. It's a disappointment today.

I am inclined to believe it. As much as I rag on Jackson, it really does have a lot of potential. The downtown can be really nice. The zoo can be nice but really it probably needs to be moved. The area is too dangerous. The animals are dying due to lack of veterinary care and the enclosures are probably not safe.

Horrible infrastructure, lack of potable water, high crime, and corruption. It might as well be Somalia.

They should move it to city park.. get rid of large animals and focus on regional animals, a big cat exhibit, reptile building, insectarium and add an amphitheater.. with the new children's museum, we'd actually have a hub for activity like a real city.

And shut down the golf course?

Too many golf courses here. That would be next to the new Children's Museum too so it's a natural location for a zoo.

Yes. They don't make their money off the tickets to walk in the place. I think it's mostly donations.

They can't get enough donations where the zoo is now. They think if they move it to Bluebonnet or something that they'll get more donations.

We don't need to move anything. Given the current political climate, there will be a push to abolish zoos over the next decade. Relocation would be a shitty investment, but that's probably why the BR govt will do it.

I say put it in the Nicholson corridor and have LSU Vet School manage it. Give undergrad students real world training and become a beacon for zoo research.

I was coming here to post this. Great idea.

And to the poster that says the zoo doesn't need the vets, that's bullshite.

Just because the shitty Baton Rouge Zoo only has an on-call vet, doesn't mean that a zoo and a vet school could not have a symbiotic relationship that could improve both entities.

I don't doubt that they would get more donations but they do get enough where they are at

They let the zoo decline in hopes they could move it, and now when people see the price tax they say what!!!!!!

It has to cost more to build a new zoo than upgrade the old zoo despite what these people tell you.

Compound that with the site they chose at the BR Fairgrounds flooded and the other site is prime line for developers.

BREC has more money than they can spend and still their parks aren't all kept up. They have a large surplus now. They need to use the money for what it was intended; keep their parks up including the lakes they are charged with keeping up, keep the zoo up and quit all this nonsense about spending 100s of million on a new zoo.

Honestly you are probably right. It would be a huge step up in size and location for the zoo. It's close to the center of the city and it would be easy to get to from the freeway....which is important as a regional attraction.

First the zoo, then the airport!

If they invested money in the current zoo it would be a great zoo. Take half the money it will take to move it and invest in the current one and it would be fine.

If they move it there it'll be closer to Ascension residents than most of BR residents. It would be pointless for many in North BR to pay the same BREC Tax.

Yep. Way too much taxpayer funded golf.

I would prefer City Park to be just a park though.

Its in a horrible location, Its laid out as if they are going to expand even though Zoo's as a whole are shrinking..

Take for example Prospect Park Zoo which uses only 12 acres..Central Park zoo is under 10.. City PArk in BR is 125 or so acres, take 65 for the zoo, 10 for an amphitheater, 5 for parking and the rest mixed in green space.

BREC taxes are property taxes. NBR is paying much, much less already.
