Most of the mom and pop places in Metairie are what I would mostly consider "safe" as well. They are poboy shops or homestyle Mr Ed's type food, with obviously a few very notable exceptions. There are no Maurepas or Booty's in Metry.

Look at the type of people that live in each of these places. A Maurepas or especially Booty's wouldn't fare too well in Metairie. It's a suburb consisting mostly of families and kids. The Bywater is composed of a completely different type of person than Metairie.

There are definitely many better Restaurants around than Houston's, but I'm not sure how you can hate it. It's pretty difficult to get a bad meal there. Yea, it's overpriced, but it's very consistent.

First off, no other restaurant has people that come around with little cards that tell you to put your phone away.

Second, last time I ate there I was served very under cooked chicken.

Lastly the food just is not good for the price they charge. I would rather Copeland's if I'm going to do a fake nice chain.

I guess our tastes are just different, but frick Copeland's. I'm convinced they can fry the shite out of anything.

This thread sure has evolved, hasn't it?

I was just being a jackass because everyone is convinced BR has a red phone that is a direct call to all chain restaurant decision makers offices.

Prime real estate on Vets is very expensive for local operators.

Houstons is among the best managed restaurants in the country.

I think it's the right place, if so, what a shame. I remember walking in there on numerous occasions with black or dark blue shirt or sport coat, walking out with black/white or navy blue and white, due to those ceiling fans on high.

Well this sucks but understandable. When we come home to visit, it's Dragos then on to Morning Call. Guess we gotta change.

$50 per sq. foot is one reason, and that seems quite reasonable in that location. My question is how the hell that magazine store next door stays in business.

I actually think their beignets are better than Cafe du Monde - hope they find a good location to continue.

I haven't been to MC in Metairie since they allowed people to smoke. I guess they had to stop that when the restaurant smoking ban began.

higher rents.

Ding ding ding. That strip mall was recently bought by some developer and rents are being raised.
A friend of mine thinks this plays into his whole lee-sheng conspiracy theory of her and her cronies buying up property near Lakeside, including Fat City and that area across 17th St. He said it began with passing the laws that closed all the bars in Fat City. He says that Lakeside Mall produces the largest amount of sales tax for the entire state of La and there isn't much room left to expand. It sounds plausible but I mostly think he is nuts

Putty gets it. Once upon a time, Lakeside Mall was generating the highest dollar per squarefoot of any mall in the US (pre-Katrina). Mom and Pop can't afford the rent in the area anymore.

Guess what, it's now happening in New Orleans now too with the growth it's seeing. Chains popping up left and right. But now you're seeing the term "Local Chain" for people to justify whats really happening.

Where else can people like Owl buy paper copies of Leather Daddy Magazine?

since there is now a Morning Call in City Park (apparently doing very well), the pressure isn't as hard on the owners to immediately find a location...that being said:

not sure about having one in the Marigny/Bywater, too many hipsters

maybe somewhere in mid-city...

or how about one in Tigertown, there are a lot of days that they would absolutely clean-up

Sorry MC is forsaking Metairie, but to me it never was congruous with the area.

I can see opening a location, possibly on Freret, Magazine, maybe Maple St. or yes, a triumphant return to the Quarter would be great - somewhere in the French Market area - maybe even Esplanade/Faubourg Marigny corridor.

But I will not say their product is either superior or inferior to Café Du Monde. They are both interconnected parts of the New Orleans heritage I grew up loving.

Oh no, her family owns some property out there for sure.

I hated her plan at first, but in the long run I do think it will be better for fat city.

I'm about to move my company to St. Claude I'm going to roll the dice on the marigny/7th border area as an up and comer.

a perfect spot (but it's more than the metaire location I'm sure) would be where that restaurant was just thrown out of, in the same building as WWOZ, right outside the market and next to the street car stop.
