I don't know how they were supposed to predict, in 1970, that a bunch of twee hipsters were going to move downtown in the 2010s and declare it "rejuvenated".

It's not exactly like the part of the quarter they moved from has been a barren wasteland for 40 years, until the "twee (???) hipsters" moved in.

Morning Call has a superior product to Cafe Du Monde, in my opinion.

I disagree based on my last trip a week ago.

They produce crispier donuts.

Especially if this is the reason. Maybe they didn't cook our batch long enough. I'm not saying their product is bad or anything.

Their coffee is definitely better though.

You mean you're not excited about the Cheesecake Factory being built now at Lakeside (taking away a couple hundred parking spaces too)?

Yep. Morning Call coffee is awesome. The plate lunches they were offering were good too. Red beans were great.

Cheesecake Factory is going on the Causeway side of the property in that nook that opens up to Cafe du Monde of all things near that entrance by the Apple Store.

bullshite.

There are quite a few mom and pops. Tons of poboy places. Ethnic places. High end restaurants? Yes, Metairie does not have a lot of that.

Yes shite. Do some people in Metairie want that too? Sure.

But just look at all of the chain restaurants in Metairie filled to the brim nightly. People like them.

I grew up there. I have many friends that live in Metry with their families. Some of them think going into the city to eat somewhere they've never heard of is just insane.

They WANT to go to Chilis. Houston's is fine dining. It is what it is.

I did not know they offered lunch. I guess I will head over there one day and give it a try.

Wow..Cant believe its been 40 years now. Seems like yesterday but yes, 40 years ago the Quarter was a nasty, smelly debauchery full of drunken tourists.... .... oh wait.

I'm not disputing this. But I've seen the Houston's on St. Charles Ave filled to the brim before too. And there are plenty of non-chain "mom and pop" restaurants in Metairie that people love too. The chains are just more visible because they're located on the main thoroughfare through the town.

I don't think I said EVERY SINGLE METRY resident wants that.

But I would venture to guess at least a majority. Most Metairie folks, in my opinion, don't like to leave Jeff Parish and like familiarity. Generalizing? Yes.

It always cracks me up when my sister's husband says he "won't drive into the city", like he's an old scared white lady. He's 28. And I know a lot of people like that. To me, driving in Jefferson Parish is infinitely more frustrating.

Most of the mom and pop places in Metairie are what I would mostly consider "safe" as well. They are poboy shops or homestyle Mr Ed's type food, with obviously a few very notable exceptions. There are no Maurepas or Booty's in Metry.

Its just more conservative by nature. And this has gone very far afield from Morning Call closing. Which does make me sad, as its a part of my childhood.

40yrs ago people were terrified to go to the Quarter because of crime. There is likely more crime now but White flight was in full effect during the 70s and that, I believe, is why they moved to Metairie.

but I think putting it somewhere on Freret would be $$$.

I can't believe Dat Dog grew big enough to move to Magazine and now Frenchmen from that tiny location on Freret, that area is definitely good for growing a business.

Also, I think having the very successful FG shop right there may have led to more customers for retail and in turn higher rents. Not their fault, but the owner saw a chance to double rent and took it.

Some of whom drive in from Orleans. So many people seem to believe that there's some kind of intractable cultural barrier along the 17th st canal. But it seems pretty much the same to me.

This is the truth, so many people I know use that as the special event restaurant. I hate Houston's.

I'll eat at a chain here and there, but there are tons of great local places. I'm just bitter that the Viet community shunned Than Truc, pisses me off to no end. Best Bun in the city.
Oh well.
Metaire has some good places, but they are more hidden. Other than Fausto's and Phoenicia and a handfull others, Veterans is all chains.
