No. The Coast Guard found the boat with 1 life jacket still on board. That does not indicate how many life jackets were on board when they launched.

I interpret it as the father is terribly naive, bordering on neglect, and his misplaced trust likely cost his son his life.

seriously, IDGAF if they grew up on the water...14 year olds are little kids. they are typically not capable of making grown up decisions.

I got a drivers license at 15, would trailer a boat, launch and fish at 15 years and 1 day old.
All aspects of maint for trailer and boat. I don't knowcwhy folks are acting as if 14 years old is a toddler.

I'm not saying they're toddlers but my friends and I were mischievious little shits at that age.
I just wouldn't trust the kids to make grown up decisions regarding weather, safety, etc. I'm sure it works for some people but I sure as hell wouldn't allow my 14 year old to take a boat offshore with his 14 year old friend.

No one knows what they were supposed to be doing. I am not saying the should have been offshore, I am just saying there is really no need to condemn the Dad for kids doing kid stuff. Maybe they stretched their boundaries, no one knows.
I think there are a lot of 14 year olds that have a pretty good level of maturity in the outdoors, hope for a great outcome

A boat on a lake and a boat in the Atlantic Ocean is not even comparable. I take my 30 foot Grady in the gulf almost every weekend and the weather is something to be respected. The ocean will kill your arse with haste!

Some people just aren't afraid of the water and learn to be on it from an early age.
Same way some parents in the city think nothing of letting their kids travel on the subways.

If your not scared of the ocean your an idiot. Problem here is you can't trust a 14 year old boy to follow your rules at all times. Not placing any blame, it's just a tragic situation.
