Why are people so fascinated with this?

I have some coonass cousins that have had every animal imaginable as a pet at some point including nutria. Their damn nutria would follow them around like a dog

I honestly didnt expect this type of overwhelming response either. But like I have said this isnt totally suprising for her, so maybe thats why. However, getting this much positive feedback has made me see it differently and appreciate what she did even more.

Well surely you understand this isnt common. But this is the kind of information that I was hunting when I started the original thread. It evolved into something much more than that.

I think you need to advise her to save some of that habitat money to feed that little sucker. Looks like he could put a dent in the family food budget as he keeps growing.

Whew.

At first I thought it was the sister and I felt bad.

Then you mentioned it and I thought "okay, I'm not the only one who noticed".

Then I went back and looked at the pic, saw the beard, and...

Meh. I heard rumor of a guy who had a pet alligator in his bathtub for a while and even managed to get it drunk once. He wasn't 12 and hiding it in his dresser from his parents though. It's a cool story.

For me, it's several things. First, I'm kind of sick of kids that age who have their nose buried in a cell phone or glued to a tv screen 24 hours a day. So it kind of has a retro feel to it. It's something a lot of kids might do back in the day, but not in today's pre-teen culture. Then there's the fact that raising something that is not nearly self sufficient or close to it yet requires some time, effort, and research to care for. The fact that she did this for a month - and especially did it all on her own AND kept it hidden from the parents - really puts it over the top. And it's just a cool thing to have as a pet. It's something that, if you found your own daughter did it, you'd be proud as a parent rather than angry.

I didnt read through the original post. So if its already been said sorry.

Some wild animals need to be fixed before they reach maturity such as skunks if they are going to be domesticated. Going off memory they can have severe mental problems if they cant mate. No idea about nutria, but the little guy looks like hes part of the family. Might be worth a call to LSU small animal clinic and ask.

Anyway nice pics.
