I find it pretty repulsive for pastors to get rich off of the people of their church. Would anyone here feel different if a pastor is rich because they write and sell a ton of books but don't take a salary from their church?

If these people are giving because they feel like the value they get from being a part of that organization and getting that comfort aligns, great. If they're giving because they feel like they have to, or for some life or religious benefit, then that's a whole other thing. It's snake oil of the highest order.

But as the saying goes, "a fool and his money are soon parted."

Someone needs to remind this pastor about 1 Timothy 3:3

one of these preachers from the Houston area I think, and I think it was discussed on here, a year or so ago I guess, was starting a money drive from his congregation to upgrade his jet, said he needed it because first of all, it wasn't swanky enough, and secondly, of course, God told him he needed to further spread the word of God, I'm sure he got the upgrade

People dumb enough to give to the bishop's services appeal or dumb enough to send their kids to overpriced Catholic schools.

Put a few bucks in the basket as it comes around, that money helps keep the lights on in your church. Don't ever mail in a check.

I mean, it's biblical. How the church uses those funds aren't on you. You are obedient to God and that's all you can do. If you feel your church is being corrupt, need to leave.

this thread in general shows me how little of an understanding of the bible people have.

This money also gets processed as the general fund...which kicks upstream. Don't believe for a second that your money is not being used, in part, to fund settlements.

Well, it is crappy. It takes trying to change the words to something else for it to not be crappy. How do you know what to take literally and what to try to interpret to something different?

Me too. These "pastors" give legitimate Christians a very bad look and cause us to be on the defensive all the time.

Pride before the fall...

she defends hard work...as if to justify that crazy car.

Any woman worthy of approaching the thrown of God, I would think would be very uncomfortable driving the car to church for the congregation to gander at...

I agree this it’s a shame that these megachurch wolves in sheep’s clothing do this.

But the worst part is many others will use this to justify not giving to their own church. Most churches are nothing like this and surviving on a shoe string budget to keep the bills paid and do some outreach activities.

When I owned my gym, one of my trainers attended one of these churches and got the pastor & 2 of his sons to start training. They roll up in 3 brand new vehicles. 2 had temp plates. A 750 BMW, the ugly Porsche sedan thing & a Mercedes G-Wagon. As he’s paying me he pulls out a roll with a rubberband. Nothing but hundreds. Pays me 2800 and it didn’t look like it put a dent in the roll. Lol. Then he starts asking me if I’ve been born again. Told him “pretty sure that only happened once”. Then he started trying to preach. He trained maybe twice and quit, basically tithed $2800 to me. Lol

Not going to try and dispute you because I have no real evidence to the contrary to convince you other than a priest telling me that if I want money to go to my church, to put it in the basket. If I want it to go to THE CHURCH, donate to the services appeal or mail in the check as my monthly gift without earmarks for what it is used for.

I asked him the exact question of "How do I know my money isn't paying for the Church to cover up pedophiles?" And that was what I was told. Earmark checks or give in the basket.

The Prosperity Gospel is basically bastardized capitalism.

Captialism teaches us that if you may successful investments, you should receive returns many times over your investments.

The Prosperity Gospel teaches us that if you have "successful" investments in your church and in your pastor, then God shall shower you with returns many times over your investments.

If people want to willingly give, whatever. The only thing that bothers me is when these churches buy personal use property and claim it is church property in order to avoid property taxes and in some cases, sales tax.

Context and reading comprehension. Theology isn’t going to be easy, the Bible is not a collection of inspirational phrases to be carved up and served piecemeal to get likes on Facebook
