A friend of mine shot and killed a bad guy in the street in front of his Uptown home. NOPD questioned him for a couple of hours and then let him go. They even gave him his gun back shortly thereafter. No civil proceedings, no nothing. Neighbor's wanted to erect a statue.

In a situation like the one in the video, I'd drive off if possible.
If someone gets in my truck or busts out a window I'm not exiting my vehicle and running away.
The video situation had not reached the point of using deadly force IMO. As long as the guy is still outside the vehicle and unarmed he is not a threat to your life.

If a road rager approach is your car with his hands in his pockets or where you can't see them, you should be able to just shoot and use the cop defense I feared for my life. That should work.

I didn't say there aren't rules protecting the driver, but in this case, it wasn't enough to shoot the guy. But yes, if he OPENED his door and attacked him, it'd be justified.

It's going to have to be a split second decision most times.
In this video I don't think deadly force is warranted. The rager is hitting the glass but not very hard... now if he smashes in the window then IMO it has escalated to a deadly force situation. If he gets the door open, it's a deadly force situation.

I'd go with this plan.
In the situation from the video, I don't know if it would be reasonable to fear for your life after the first 10 hits of the window. At that point, it is pretty evident that the irate driver wasn't getting in the car. The driver would not have been justified in shooting through the glass at the end if the video.
However, he might have been after the first hit of the window. He should have shot earlier.

The dude in the car was surprisingly calm. I don't think I possess the ability to sit there and let some dork yell at me like that. I'm pretty confidant in my ability to handle myself, I might have gotten out of the car. Obviously that's the exact wrong thing to do in this situation but goddamn it would have felt good to give that guy a nice open hand slap.

You would not be wise to use your sidearm in that situation. You would need a very self-defense friendly DA to not get charged.
Even if found innocent there is probably a minimum of $15K in legal to get out of it.
