quote:

The North Gates lost a special member of its community yesterday when Maryland Batiste passed away. Maryland was one of the most outgoing, positive, and loving people any of us has ever known. He always had a smile, a greeting, a personalized hand shake, or a hug for you when you walked into Highland Coffees, where he could usually be found sitting right next to the front door. And he rarely forgot a name. Maryland adored music and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of several genres. When he attended live music performances, one always knew he was there because he liked to stand right up front to soak it all in. His presence made every occasion better because of his enthusiasm and joy. Maryland's uplifting spirit will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to get to know him.

Prayers for the guy

Awe man. He use to come into Serranos all the time and order a fajita setup plate. Always tried to pick whichever bartender that was working brain.

I remember when he graduated from his discman to a laptop computer, he was so proud of it. He was a kind and happy person.

I feel so ashamed that I sometimes got annoyed with him while trying to study.

I am so glad I saw this here--why I love to get all my news from TD. Am out of town and never would have known otherwise.

Knew Maryland well in the 90's in undergrad and then he disappeared for a while (he had a major surgery around that time.) I moved away for a few years. Literally 10+ years later I returned to Highland Coffees to finish a major work project that I wanted to escape the office to complete, and I saw him. He walked right up and asked me where I had been and why it had been so long since I had been around.

I've always been so thankful that he found a way to be cared for--when I first met him he was not in the far-better position he was in more recently. A special person. :(

The first time I was on campus as a young man, we went to Highland coffee shop. That place holds a place in my heart without a doubt.

Here's to you Mr Maryland

He used to hang around the Library (the bar, not the actual library) back when that place was a real freak parade. Amazingly sweet natured person. We all could stand to be a little more like him.

We used to make coffee for him at north gate bar.

Always felt bad for the guy.

I was at Lsu late 90s-2000's... Him and the short nappy hair white artist were institutions.

Definitely someone you saw everywhere around the north gate/ chimes area. Sorry to see this happened.

This is a touching tribute, so thumbs up.

And now maybe I kind of have to ask a bad question: was he a little slow or something?

Very nice article here, though LINK

I used to work at the Varsity and had the opportunity to chat with Maryland many a night on the front steps of Varsity/Chimes. RIP, homie.

Aww I hate to hear that. When I worked at Tiger District we would always give him free shirts.

I'm pretty sure I saw him walking down Gov. Street late last week.
