That's why in BJJ, we teach you how to get back to your feet either with a sub or a sweep.

As for the best fighting style to teach a kid, it is boxing without a doubt. Knowing how to properly throw a punch, react to punches thrown at you, and fighting out of the proper stance gives the average kid an advantage over just about any other kid that might pick on them. In fact, I have been training in martial arts for almost 20 years and a good boxer is probably the most dangerous of all the strikers.

Then after you get a solid base in boxing, move into BJJ at a school that has wrestling pedigree where you can incorporate take-downs and take-down defense.

If you are lucky, you may find a school that has all of it under one roof.

In the octagon that's fine, but in a real fight the last place you want to be is on the ground... unless you want one of his friends to kick you in the face

This has always been my issue with grappling. Great in a competition setting, but a liability in plenty of real life situations.

I watched a fight when I was in college where one guy went to the ground intending to grapple, and was kicked unconscious by a plant baw in steel toes.

My brother has two daughters ages 22 and 19. Both have taken Karate since they were very young (less than 10). The oldest is a 3rd. degree black belt ,the youngest a 1st. Both are very confident young lady's and I assure you can defend themselves against more the one foe.
They grew up in Calif. and just left for college, one in Minnesota and one in Arizona. MY brother and his wife sleep very well.
Hope this helps.

I have several of the Gracie Academies around the area and I think they have kickboxing and BJJ.

What about age suggestions?

My kid is almost 5, and I thought now would be a good time to start instilling confidence beyond what I already do at home.

My son is 10. HAs been involved in TKD for 5 years. He loves it.

This year his soccer practices switched night s and conflicted with TKD. He was crying trying to figure out how to keep up with both. He did not want to fall behind his friends in either one.

Luckily his instructors in both are willing to work with him.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to find an instructor who is GOOD WITH KIDS. They need to be firm but also delicate. Not enough discipline is as bad as too much. Most teachers teach variants of several martial arts.

We are happy with where we are. Good luck.

I don't think its weird for kids to do martial arts at all

BUT

growing up it seemed like only weird kids and nerds did it. I remember people getting made fun of for it.

If it was my kids I'd get them to play baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. first.

Teaches teamwork and social skills which are invaluable. And hand eye coordination which helps in everything. But that's just me. I do wish I had learned boxing at an earlier age, that is something I really enjoy as a workout as an adult.

Go check them out. See if they have other young children studying there.

We have the Champions Cup in NOLA in mid November, two weeks before that is Midnight in Mandeville.

I think we're playing a good amount of Mississippi tournaments this year, y'all coming this way at all?

My daughter is 7, been in karate for about a year now. I figure by the time she's at an age where she will start dating, she will be able to kick the dudes arse.

What martial art do yo believe is the best for kids and why?

Anything grappling: Judo, BJJ, "MMA," or wrestling. They're battle tested, no-nonsense, practical and just work.

Also, what age do you think to start them? I know most places have a minimum age requirement.

Most places have a kids class to ease them into training and start them pretty young. I'd say school age (5 or 6) is a perfect time.

I am a Gracie BJJ instructor. I would go and check them out is the best advice I can give you unless you tell me what area you live and maybe I could give you a recommendation from there. We are still a relatively new martial art and if they are a Gracie school, we can still trace our roots back to the source.

You should be looking for a school that has separate kids classes and obviously one that has instructors that are good with kids. It's pretty easy to know you are in the right school just by looking at how they interact with the kids. It's kinda of an unwritten rule that the kids classes pay the bills and the adults classes pad the wallet, so it pays to be good with the kiddos.

This is really really stupid. It's right up there with Aikito masters being too deadly to display their full capabilities, five finger death punches, and jesus on toast.

No, it makes perfect sense. First, there is plenty of information, videos, etc online to see the difference between the two. Second, I am not sure you understand to what lengths lawyers will go. The lawyer can go after an instructor easily. Even if they do not have a case the instructor has to pay to defend themselves.

For kids the objective is discipline. Look for a studio that doesn't allow the kids to wear their belts outside of the studio. That's a good indication.
