Spinoff from the bully thread.

What martial art do yo believe is the best for kids and why?

Also, what age do you think to start them? I know most places have a minimum age requirement.

Most fights end up on the ground. Make sure It includes the ground game.

We had ours in Kenpo and they taught striking and ground tactics. Submissions, ground and pound, etc. along with kicks and punches.

Ignore that. Age 7+ is appropriate. At age 4 and 5, it's not much more than a cute photo op for the parents to post on FB.

My niece is in 2nd - 3rd grade and she has always been an entire head shorter than everyone in her class. She used to get bullied a lot. Her dad signed her up for jiu jitsu classes and kickboxing, Like one of those MMA gyms provide. She kicks arse now! And no one bullies her anymore.

Cute to see the little thing flip a boy twice her size at a tournament

The most popular and seemingly most actually real life situation applicable one out there right now is Brazilian jiu jitsu. How good is it for kids? I don't know.

Just saying - For many pop-up martial arts studios, the kiddie classes are a major source of income.

quote:

Bruce Lee.....was 13 years old when he began his training... Chuck Norris was older at 18. General Choi Hong-Hi, founder of Taekwon-Do, was around the age of 20 ..... Michelle Yeoh of Crouching Tiger and James Bond Tomorrow Never Dies fame, didn't start martial arts training until 22......

From this it would seem that attaining a high level of success in martial arts is not dependant on a very early start, all these people being above 11 years old. However some other martial arts greats did begin a little younger. Jet Li .. was aged 8 ... Jackie Chan was 7, Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha was around 7 or 8 when he began judo,...) and Steven Seagal was around 6 or 7

https://www.wirraltaekwondo.com/what-age-should-a-child-start-martial-arts

quote:

Of thirty seven instructors, nine had taught children of 3 or 3½ but none had had a 3 year old starter reach black belt. Some of these children may still be training but only one instructor had managed to get a 3 year old starter to at least green belt. Fifteen instructors had taught 4 or 4½ year olds, three of whom had had a child go on to achieve a black belt (in no cases were children the offspring of the instructors).

Tae Kwon Do all the way buddy. It is a beautiful art. Find a dojo where they teach ITF style not WTF and practice full contact sparring. ITF is more Shotokan inspired and focuses on punches and kicks equally and is aimed more towards self defense. WTF is the style they do in the Olympics, nothing but flashy spinning kicks, it is sport TKD not really good for self defense or kicking arse.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA/ground fighting is trashy if not borderline gay.

Any of them. They teach discipline, confidence and how to throw a punch/kick.

Also, as stated ground game is important. Judo, Jiu jitsu, Tai Kwan Do, Karate all work.

Krav Maga is a little much for children.

Muay Thai. Good Muay Thai schools have fantastic programs for kids. They do spar but it's more of a playful atmosphere rather than full contact head trauma. It gives the kids the opportunity to actually compete with other kids right away. Things like point karate have their place but they really can not compare with actively throwing and landing kicks/punches/knees/elbows.

BJJ is the other good one. Again, it forces kids to compete with each other. They will get choked as have the opportunity to tap others.

Olympic style wrestling I place high on my list as well. There is a reason why nobody ever fricks with the kid with cauliflower ears. The great thing about this one is its offered at some schools and is growing in popularity if you live in a southern state. Plus this weird little gang of pussy follows wrestling teams around. OT grapplers, you know what I'm talking about.

This isn't just for boys, all this goes for girls as well.

This girls is a badass bitch. Choking out untrained boys is impressive but here she is with someone who's got the skills to beat her.

Of course Jasmine Parr. Probably not the best example because her father is John Wayne Parr but impressive non the less. I believe she was 13 years old in this video.

Tae Kwon Do is very good. My son made it all the way to 3rd degree Black Belt. It really helped with self confidence and commitment. He stopped training a few years ago but, it had a very good impact on him. He's a great student and a responsible teenager.

If you do it, I suggest finding a school that is a member of the American Tae Kwon Do association.

My instructor had a Krav class for kids. I would get their early and it was a bunch of little Jewish kids with their kippahs on. He was very patient with the kids.
