Crime rates are falling to historic lows. We lock up 3X losers for life. Cops think they've lowered the crime rate, when we all know it's the judges.
Legislators - Judges - Police - American Public
None of this is possible without the complicity of the four entities.
It's going to reach a point of almost no return - if it hasn't already - where we all look back and wonder how this clusterfrick came to be. I know all right. I know that we are a nation of easily swayed cowards that believes one of the safest places to ever exist is really a lawless cage-match in need of much authority and control.
All because of the drug war, it's prolific tough-on-crime propaganda, and everyone who bought into it at all these levels. We are going long on this one. No doubt.

So:
This guy breaks the same law repeatedly. Then once again gets busted for breaking the law for the same offense.
Guy makes statement that "I told yall last time" "This stops today"
Guy is instructed he is being arrested and says "don't put your hands on me" and resists arrest
Guy is placed in choke hold and taken to the ground landing on his knees first and then rolling on his side. Choke hold lasts a total of 17 seconds.
Multiple LEO aide in subduing the guy without using firearms, tazers, batons, punches, or blows of any kind. They simply hold him down to the ground and wrestle his arms behind his back so he can be cuffed.
Once on ground he continues to resist arrest while being instructed to place his arm behind his back.
Morbidly obese, asthmatic criminal then dies.
And the arse hats here think the cops were wrong for enforcing the law, should have let him go because they don't like the law, somehow conclude that physical force was used to intentionally murder this criminal for the crime of selling untaxed cigs, and blame them for this grossly out of shape asthmatic criminal's death.
Holy frick some of you people are total blame shifting idiots.

Well, the real driver was the AP. Thus, laws were passed by legislators to empower judges to give longer sentences. Longer sentences meant once the cops arrested criminals and they were convicted, they want away for a long time.
Cops honestly had very little to do with the lower crime rates, which was my point.
This is not a knock on cops, they always knew criminals commit crimes.
My problem right now is I see a lot more aggressive police behavior and ridiculous amounts of military-style equipment in Barney Fife's hands. Given what has occurred with crime on a national scale, this is completely unnecessary.

Some people get intimidated very easily.
It's good we have police for you.

That's right! You tell, em! The State uber alles!
I can't wait for the state to start going after service providers like plumbers and waiters and other who work in cash-heavy businesses, because you know those criminals are not fully-reporting their tax obligations and paying their taxes. I for one would like to see the cops using physical force to apprehend these criminals too. Freedom!

read again. I believe you are taking the pronoun out of context in an effort to be offended.
I'll edit if your feelings are really that hurt.
In point of fact, I think you are correct that "some" are blame shifting. Some here just hate LEOs regardless. However, from the video I saw (several times now), it seems the police used unnecessary force on the suspect. Given that he died in their custody, I think they are at fault.

Holy frick you don't understand that a 17 second choke hold is EXPLICITLY against department rules.

But they were enforcing the law. It's OK.

I did not realize this.
If against the rules then they should certainly be reprimanded for using the hold.
But I can EXPLICITLY tell you that the 17 second choke hold in the video is a far cry from enough to cause any grave bodily injury.

I was not offended. I was just curious how you feel an independent opinion of the events after observing the video makes anyone a sheep.

please tell me what you would have deemed necessary and appropriate force? What is the next step in securing this very large and powerful mans hands after he has forcefully pulled them away from you during your attempt to handcuff him.

My opinion is, if you can continue to yell "I can't breathe" which he did at least 3 times, you're freaking breathing! If you're airflow is cut off, you can't speak.
Agreed!
Autopsy will probably show a heart attack.

How about just issuing a freaking ticket considering the guy was not a danger to the public? I see jay walkers everyday in NYC. They pose a danger to themselves and to others, but I sure as hell don't want to see police officers start tackling jay walkers and putting people in choke holds.
Honestly, some of you people kind of scare me.
