From the American Lung Cancer Association:

"Smoking, a main cause of small cell and non-small cell lung cancer, contributes to 80 percent and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in women and men, respectively. Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Women are 13 times more likely, compared to never smokers."

Hell, I've never smoked but if I did, this would be the wake up call I needed!

That's great news. It will eventually need be ticketed for the rule to be effective, but it will be nice not to see littered cigarette butts around campus.

That has always pissed me off about smokers. It's like they have a license to litter.

We all end up paying more to cover the medical care of smokers

This is the talking point, but actually medical costs are significantly lower for smokers than they are for the obese, and smokers pay higher premiums to offset these costs, unlike the obese. There's also this:

quote:

”Smokers die early enough that they save Social Security, private pensions, and Medicare” trillions of dollars”, said Duke’s Eric Finkelstein. “But mortality isn’t that much higher among the obese.”

Pretty hypocritical that an obese professor is leading the charge on this.

Do yall not see a bigger picture here. Its yet another freedom thats trying to be taken away. Wake up people! I do not want to live in a world where a grown adult cannot go outside after a hard days work, or a hard exam and light a cigarette to calm them down. I do not even smoke and this is a terrible thing. Country is a bunch of pussies.

This decision isn't because the university doesn't like smoking or dipping, or whose rights should be protected. Does anyone really think LSU is doing this with no motivation?

The reason is that most if not all cancer charities will not give research dollars to universities that allow the use of tobacco products on their grounds.

I think it's great that LSU thinks cancer research is more important than allowing people to smoke on campus.

Boom. Funny also that she's ok with the social shaming aspect of her plan, but I bet she'd be in hysterics about social shaming of fatties.

Have to agree. Everyone praising this, just remember the next rule change could affect you.

And I hate being around smokers.

Smoking is for the weak minded anyway. I'm glad they did this, shite is disgusting and has no redemmeing qualities. Do that shite on your own property if you want.

Yeah I can totally see this ban working out well, especially banning dip and smoking during game days.

I routinely saw empty Skoal cans in the CEBA parking lot on my way to class in the mornings.

The only inconvenience here are the extreme lack of principles, namely American principles of liberty.

Why is it always ugly people trying to draw attention to themselves?

I used to work with this lady who had a 400 pound daughter and she was the most obnoxious piece of repugnant shite you could imagine. She pretended to fall asleep at a Mexican food place just to draw attention to herself. But if I looked like this cow, I wouldn't want to walk out my door.

But she thought she looked good. She would wear mini-skirts. Looked like two elephants fighting under a circus tent when she walked.
