Dude, buy whatever kind of dog you want. Your 4 year old doesn't give a frick, and within a week she'll love whatever you bought.

To add another note I would prefer a puppy for a few reasons.
1. Gives my daughter the opportunity to name it whatever ridiculous name she wants
2. Lets me train it how I want
3. Not much fun getting an older rescue dog, kids love the crazy puppy

You're probably not going to find a small dog that is great with kids. Our yorkies are ok with my 4 year old niece because for the most part they avoid her arse like the plague.
Yorkies are after all terriers, and they have the terrier attitude to go with it. If you know that going into it they are great dogs.
My mother in law also has one that loves kids. One of mine loves anyone that sits on the couch and picks him up.
The other just wants to play frisbee all damn day.

I just don't get the toy dogs, especially for families. I know people have different opinions, but I'd much prefer my kid grow up with a golden or a lab or something like that.
Some people don't have the yard, don't want a large animal in their home, don't have room for it to get exercise, etc.
I grew up with a medium sized dog (Blue Heeler -- a form of Australian Cattle Dog), but I also grew up on several acres in the sticks.
Also.. as much fun as I had growing up with her, I didn't have the emotional attachment I have to my current indoor dog (Westie).

You can name an adopted dog whatever you want.

Just choose well. Don't get a dog that is described as "anxious". I've never met a very well-trained Yorkie anyway

You can rescue puppies.. or even just 1-2 year olds.
Yorkies in general aren't going to be the playful thing you're thinking. They're cutie and some of them are spunky/fun, but their temperament is not generally children-oriented.
Not saying you shouldn't get a Yorkie. Just saying that in general.

Don't let the "adoption mob" intimidate you into getting a shelter dog. If there's a puppy at a shelter, get it if you want it. If you want a pure bred puppy, get one. There's nothing wrong with getting a pure bred dog from a reputable breeder. I prefer pure bred dogs. It's preference. It doesn't make you any less of a dog owner.

This is going to sound pretty callous but here goes..
1- Dont get a rescue animal for a 4 year old girl. Chances are nothing will go wrong but they are in a rescue situation for some reason. Could have been abused or had issues that led to them being placed for rescue.
2- Dogs costs alot of money. The money you pay to get a dog is very small compared to the other expenses (Food, vet care and misc stuff) Get a quality bred dog.
We got a Golden when my daughter was 6. The dog was the best animal ever and was sweet as could be. We got her from someone who wanted there dog to have a litter of puppies. (Not a puppy mill just a regular family). The dog had health issues starting at 6 years of age. (Most genetic) She was a great dog but dealt with health issues the last 5 years of her life. It wasn't easy for us and expensive. The dog lived until she was 11.
We got another Golden but this time we spent $900 instead of $300 and got a very well bred dog. He is just as sweet. You can tell the difference physically between the two.
Yorkies are cool. If you live in the country be careful. Hawks take them off sometimes. Happened to a friend of mine.

Well trained in behavior no, but they are smart as hell. Smartest dog I've ever had.
He will sit, stay, lay down, roll over, give me knuckles, high five, combat roll, several others.
He hides bones all over the house. He once hide a bone at some families house, we returned a year later and he darted as soon as we got in the house to go get the bone he put behind someones dresser.

Go get you a schnauzer.
- Doesn't shed.
- Decent amount of energy to keep up with your kid.
- Can also be lazy as hell.
- Sturdy dog.
- Easy maintenance.

I understand those things. For me, with kids, I would have a yard, have no problem with a large animal in my home, and would facilitate exercise for everyone (including the dog).
So I get people getting small dogs as a matter of circumstance, I just don't "get" the choice of a 5 pound dog for a family. I love all dogs, so I'm not bemoaning it, I just will never really understand seeking out a Yorkie (I do understand having the family fall in love with a smaller dog or something just by chance).
I have lots of friends with smaller dogs, and while I certainly like them, none of them get the fulfillment out of their dogs (and their dogs never seem as happy either) as those with larger dogs or even smallish dogs with larger breed attitudes (various mixes, corgis, etc.).
Again, I like dogs, and I hope all the tiny dogs that need rescuing get rescued, I just don't really understand the appeal of the tiny dogs if you can spend your days playing fetch or hiking with a larger one.
Anyway, hope OP does what's best for his situation. That said, I bet his daughter wouldn't mind growing up with a golden retriever puppy...

Have you ever owned a dog before? Honest question, because i don't think you have.

You and everyone else who has every adopted a shelter dog can change the name of your dog

Again, you can always train a dog however you want. Unless you dont know what you're doing.

You can find dogs under a year old at shelters. Sometimes only a few weeks or months.

My dog is more important to me than some of my family members.
