I installed flooring for a general contractor that worked on salary. I was paid by the home owner(no 1099) and he was able to undercut other generals by $100k.
And?
And good luck finding that GC when you have issues or need to file a claim against his GL.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, too.
Was also wondering about insurance as well...

It happened to a guy down here running around doing the same thing. He had to take on quite a few jobs to justify doing it that way and they started dragging out to the point of never getting 100% complete. People were having to extend their 6 month loans and were having trouble getting draws from the bank because crap wasn't getting done.
He just had too much on his plate and since he was simply a paper contractor he had no direct control over labor to help him get stuff done.
Not sure how it all ended up but I know a few people fired him and hired another GC just to finish up. He's no longer in business though.

Ken Montgomery built my house - excellent builder - don't know if he is still in the business - I believe his son is building now with Mr. Ken advising him.

Ken M is building houses.
Makes sense.

Not sure why you turned to tigerdroppings for a business review. Try searching on Angie's List.

Ron Babb and look up Telich on Facebook.

Wasn't necessarily looking for a review unless someone worked with them. More looking for other options for builders.

Ken is still doing a house here and there. Mostly in Collins place. Not sure if he's taking on customs tho.

Robert Lynch
Ron Babb.
I know both and both are great and very reputable builders. Your issue might be where you want to build. Some builders might charge more for going far out LP FOR distance reasons. I've seen it many times. Their subs want to charge more and their typical suppliers charge more to deliver outside the BR area. Just an FYI.

Would reccomend this. Only drawback is he looks a lot like Nick Saban so you might want to fight him more than a normal GC.
Really though, was the most attentive and no nonsense GC we dealt with. The timelines he gave were always met and didn't jerk around his contractors. Never went to a site and he wasn't there or made contact while we were there.
Whoever 4WHLN reccomends is likely legit too, he deals with lots of contractors.

I do a good bit of work with Willie Martin, Martin Construction. (among several other builders)
Mid-upper end houses. I have no idea of his pricing, but I'd give him a good look if I were building.
Good luck, it can be a fun process with the right builder.
An interior designer can make the process much more fun by organizing your decision making (don't neccesarilly expect the builder to do that for you.)

Obviously you aren't building a true custom home, you want to build a cheaper spec house yourself

I certainly hope that he is using a different window manufacturer than he did on the house he built for me 14 years ago. Every wood window had to be replaced over the ten years I lived in that house.
Issues of window leakage started in the first year. We informed him right away (not in writing though) and he put it off long enough that he was no longer responsible. Lesson learned, always inform builder of any problems in writing and send it certified mail so that you are protected against the Mr Nice Guy bull crap.
