My ex-girlfriend had a back injury from a car accident 10-12 years ago. She has been going to pain management for the last several years and is prescribed tramadol daily and hydrocodone when needed. She never abused it and always had extra at the end of the month but I always worried about where is was going to lead and if that was going to be something she would take for the rest of her life. There never seemed to be any treatment of the injury, only treatment for the pain. What's the outlook for something like that? Does taking tramadol and hydro have long term side affects even if not abused? What if she tries to stop one day due to pregnancy or something? All that stuff worried me with everything I read and know about pain meds.

corrective surgery has actually caused permanent and unfixable damage and serious chronic pain? In this person's case the only PT that has been advised is aquatic walking as anything more will further damage major joints.

Start with TCA or Cymbalta, add Lyrica/gabapentin. Reassure patient consistently that pain will not actually kill them. And if all else fails, potentially eventually opiates.

But only after 3g/d of Tylenol and a Max dose NSAID as well.

I've heard people liken legitimate chronic pain to bring in a waking nightmare daily that you know you won't get out of.

Feds cracking down on pain killers while denying alternate forms of relief will cause a bubble that we haven't seen of suicides from the madness that the prison of chronic pain brings.

It's truly a shame the junkies & US drug policies will end up killing innocent asylum seekers

Does C oil actually work, or is it just people wanting to get high?

The Mu opiate receptor builds up a tolerance over time, & on a long enough scale would take them just to not get sick.

They have cannabis in capsule form (cannibinol?), & other variations being developed w/out active THC. Right now it comes down to if you're fortunate to live in a legalized state. It's a completely avoidable issue if they would stop politicizing medical cannabis.

Civilizations have been using it for thousands of years for pain. (Including the US when it was founded into the 1800s).

Rubbing it on an injury doesn't really get you high, just helps with the pain.

I mean ingestion for pain. Does it knock the pain down. My hands and that joint where the spine and hip meet kill me at times.

Most chronic pain people are helped by a Rythym Device

There are many treatment options outside of opioids-non narcotic meds, therapies, injections, several different procedure options, etc. I worked at a pain clinic several years ago, and from my experience, the cancer and acute pain patients were FAR more likely to NOT want narcotic paid meds than the minimal pain pts.

Needless to say, it didn't take very long to tell the druggies apart from the true pain patients.

There is no real evidence showing that opiates improve their function and are associated with a lot of potential harms. There are a number of other therapies. Pain is a symptom, the cause should be treated. Opiates should be reserved for cancer and acute pain (sparingly).

If this guy is a legit doctor he can go frick himself. How about every time you move it feels like someone is sticking a knife in your back.... guess you would get "treatments" only to discover they dont do jack shite.

Opiates themselves do not cause harm if not abused and they most certainly do improve function and quality of life. The biggest problem with them for legit people with chronic pain is that they are mixed with crap like acetaminophen to deter abuse.

Just had the nerves burnt off my spine with radio frequency treatment Friday for the 4th time. I grow my own opiate medication which allows me to work full time and provide for my family without being on disability.

Who cares if junkies overdose on prescription pain meds? Whoopie doo! Why make it nearly impossible to obtain for people that need them?

Talk about opiates being a health risk and then recommend drugs which have terrible effects on the body. Max does of NSAID... well hello acid reflux and kidney damage.

My doctor prescribed me 120 pills of 7.5 Norco NOV 2015, I've only used a 3rd of that to this date. If I were to need more, she'll write me a prescription because she knows I won't abuse it.

Here, here!!! frick that dude. I'd like to pound him in the nuts with a ball peen hammer once every 20 seconds for the rest of his life and then let that little fig tell me he will take a Tylenol and tell himself that the pain won't kill him. I'd like to kick the shite out of a few douchebags in this thread. This kinda shite hits close to home, and i bet these pussies who are acting tough haven't had anything worse than a hangnail in their life.

Do not rely on the medication itself. It is not healing your problem, only helping you manage activities of your daily life.

Get a co-management team of specialists together and "fix" the "problem" causing you to have pain. A nutritionist/dietitian (board licensed), therapeutic massage (board licensed), a podiatrist, a psychologist (not psychiatrist bc they don't talk just write more Rx and tell you to see a psychologist), a chiropractor, a physical therapist, an athletic trainer (licensed), if you do not have any contraindications then use a home TENS unit, cold and hot packs, correct your postural ergonomics against gravity (the way you sit, stand, bend, lift, reach, stand, and laying down), take beginners yoga classes. And there is much more however what I've listed is a healthy and safe start.
