I won a 51" samsung 4550 plasma tv at my company Christmas raffle. I was about to start a thread asking if I should try and return it. I currently have a 46" led samsung that is around 8 years old. I will probably replace my 36" sony in my bedroom with the led. My living room has 3 windows and a door that have blinds. Would the plasma be ok in there?

Ive gone with LED's because they say plasma will "burn" an image into it if left on the screen for a period of time. Not sure if its possible to "burn" an image into an LED tv but I know it's not as big of an issue with LED.

Since you seem to know what you are talking about. How much of the picture quality is based off brand names?

I ask this because I purchased a 50" LED last night online from Sam's. It was an off brand, but I was willing to take a chance because of the price.

I'd take the plasma picture over an LED any day. If I were going with an LED I would look for a full array LED. It will be thicker, but better than an Edge lit LED. Watch out for clouding or banding on Edge lit LED screens. Try to find a store that has a good return policy in case you get one that does have this problem. The only real downside to the plasma is it runs hotter, you still can get screen burn in although not like the old ones, and the glare.

But you have to take the plasma to get refilled once a year and that is a big pain in the arse. Headed to best buy next week to refill mine.

My dad has a much older plasma that is about ~8-9 years old. It has permanent lines burned in from my mom watching most everything in letter box.

My Plasma is about 4 years old and does not have a problem with permanent burn in. This issue has been corrected in newer TVs. However, if I leave something paused for long periods of time I will notice a temporary burn in for a few moments that ALWAYS goes away.

To be honest, plasmas are fine most of the time in terms of glare/reflection.

I have a plasma in my living room, and TONS of windows. Even have a skylight (sort of) in my hosue. And I never have issues with glare or reflection from my screen (65"). Very rarely do I eve notice reflections on the glass, and when I do, it's very fleeting and not distracting at all to my TV watching.

Also, technology has come a LONG arse way in terms of burn-in, to the point where it's really not much of an issue at all anymore. Though it was funny when we went to Ruffino's a couple weeks ago, some of their plasmas (looked to be older) had the ESPN Bottom Line burned into the screen.

But honestly, aside from the fact that it's hard as shite to burn something into your screen these days, you're not likely to leave your TV on anything long enough to even remotely worry about burn-in anyway.

Many of the panels come from the same factories. What is different between the name brands (The Ss, Panasonic, etc.) and the Vizio (although getting better), Hisense, etc., are the computers/software they add for processing, smart tv, and so forth. In addition, when you buy a name brand, you're buying their customer support (for better or worse).

Getting an off-brand that looks good in the store, calibrating it correctly, and so forth, can go a long way in mitigating the perceptible differences between the various classes. Just keep in mind that the off brand are competing solely on gross specs - size and price - they want to deliver the best price per inch of television. The brand names are trying to provide the best possible television at a particular price point. That difference in philosophy shows in the final analysis, IMHO.

I don't even see how this is a competition. LED all day. Just got a 50" and it's incredible.

Go to any place that sells tv's and you will find that there are about 25 led/lcd tvs for each plasma they sell. There is a reason for it.

because it is more expensive to manufacture Plasma.
Pretty easy to see this. Not real sure why so many have a hard time picking up on this.

not that i'm disagreeing...but

if plasmas are more expensive to make, then why do they sell for less, yet still get outsold by LED by a large margin

it's become a profit margin issue with the manufacturers. That's why they're being phased out. Retailers have pushed the LED/LCD'S much harder than Plasmas and have pretty much dictated market value and shares in the television market.

BTW,A good brand Plasma is not less than a good brand LED.
Check out the prices on the GT series Panasonics.
